And Legion bypasses Armada in expansions...

By kmanweiss, in Star Wars: Armada

Armada needs another space battle,

I think that is the core issue, Rogue One was a really good boost, as well as Rebels ( for both GCW era )

Last Jedi had a space battle but not the one we expected and Solo lacked any proper space action ( it was such a good opportunity to make Victory class canon)

reintroducing Clone Wars might help Armada get into that era, if there is a good space battles at Episode IX maybe it can generate enough attention to bring the second trilogy era to Armada as well.

Here's hoping.

CW coming back and the rest of the Star Wars TTG games entering the era seems to bode well for Armada. I'd love to have both prequel and sequel era factions/ships.

Armada has also been at the last few pages of the FFG catalogues that come in the starter set of their latest games too!

Well FFG haven’t completely given up on engaging with the Armada community, they still occasionally lock threads in our forum.

Whilst that statement would be uplifting if it was true...

It appears to me non-FFG employees are primarily controlling which threads are being locked :P

I thought the mods would have to be FFG employees?

It was a jest aimed at an unrelated incident or two elsewhere on the forums. @Bakura83 similarly was making a joke on that behalf.

I'm sure the mods are FFG employees in some capacity :)

On a more related note to the topic;

Don't we all agree Armada isn't going to end? We're just talking about the weirdness of their handling throwing Legion and X-wing 2.0 at their player bases and all being quiet in the Outer Rim in the Armada community basically.

Yeah legion has more expansions but each individual expansion is a smaller part of the overall lists so I am not surprised we have more smaller releases

A couple of other points; Armada seems to be in a really good place at the moment. If for whatever reason the game was frozen forever as it is now, I think it could still last quite a while.

Mort importantly, though, while Legion has more expansions, in terms of value there's still much more Armada stuff out there. Across all 25 expansions Armada is currently at ~$1,020 retail price. Legion is at ~$564 across 26 expansions (which, as others have noted, are far easier, quicker and cheaper to make, with minimal assembly and no painting).

Plus FFG know how well Armada is selling and being played; I take how quickly re-stocks are selling out to be a pretty good sign: they keep printing more stuff, it keeps disappearing quickly - good for us, good for them.

Armada's current "stock" is a shame indeed. If it is up to FFG alone, this game is dead, and honestly, one of the only reason this game is still alive is because of content creators like Mel's Minatures and local table top stores. FFG does a terrible job of advertising these games, ****, I didnt even know X-Wing existed untill I stumbled upon the HWK minature on e-bay when looking for Starwars Micromachines.

Fortunately, Legion IS actually pretty cool... so I don't mind it growing.

However - the main problem I have is that Armada's low priority has lead me to play other games, and spend even more money. Started playing the Star Wars RPG, and now Battlestar Galactica Starship Battles is looking interesting... plus lots more board games... and Keyforge... oh lord Keyforge

I feel like Legion is easier to put out expansions due to it not requiring painting along with it being designed differently compared to Armada. Less upgrades and more focus on the base Units. Plus add in the fact that they have more content available to them to make expansions out of.

Legion is a real great game and I love the release schedule. I wishbarmada would just get 1/3 of the releases Legion is getting.

That seems to be a problem I feel in this game a tad, like x-wing, base units, or the "normal pilots" are completely useless and made to take 2nd seat to pilots like Vader, Luke, and the like. Don't get me wrong, Ill be one of the first people in line (Assuming i have the money) for a Rogue Squadron campaign pack, or Corran Horn green X-Wing, but the problem is, these type of pilots should be RARE, and that is what makes them special. If that is all that is ever seen in a game, they become just as generic as the ship they are flying. These types of games should not just be a celebration of some unique pilots, but a celebration of the ships themselves and why we love them.

At the moment only the squadrons 1s, the Kitten, and the Quasar and Hammerheads are out of stock officially. The squadron 1s are always out of stock, and probably always going to be out of stock as they're among the most important expansions, and people need lots of them. The Quasar and Hammerheads have just had a reprint, so they should be appearing in stock soon (some stores already have them). I think they may have been caught off guard by how popular the Kitten is at the moment, but we've had a couple of re-stocks in the last month or so, as they reappear.

I think FFG have done a pretty good job of making sure most stuff is in stock most of the time. They don't want too much surplus (bad for FLGSs, bad for them), and it is always going to be a bit difficult to find the right balance.

@Grumbleduke Arquitens reprints are shipping atm so no more than 2 weeks.

Clearly not a GW or ForgeWorld guy. Let me give you a sample (no I don't own this but I know a guy who does).

So SSD will be %20 of all expansions, that is a lot actually, well the whole game is a bit expensive, we are looking for new waves and all, but affordability is a issue as well.

If there were waves coming out the same rate with Legion or Xwing, I guess we would have a game where we have to pay more than a few hundred each year to keep it up with.

I basically got flamed for mentioning this in another thread. But the hosts of The Outer Rim Job said they know from a source in FFG that wave 8 is being playtested as of (at least) three weeks ago.

I hope this is true. We shall see.

Wow. Okay. That is extreme.

Im my defense I did spend 10 years as a Warhammer and a little time as a Lord of the Rings player back in the day, but nothing was that expensive back then.

Armada 8snt dead. There For, there will be a wave 8. Trhat said, the ssd was in development for at least 2 years, so this information is little beyond whagg we already know, plus some sneaky guesswork.

I’m convinced there is a wave 8. I even like the super slow release schedule

The silence is what is irritating and an easily solved marketing issue that boggles my mind why they won’t. Even just a simple news release saying: “Wave 8 news coming, sometime, eventually. Don’t worry guys” is better than the current system. They long gaps between waves isn’t an issue. The total lack of marketing is.

After the shitshow that was their hyperspace report I actually walked away from Armada for about 6 months. The SSD has gotten some players excited and gotten me to pull Armada back out. The trouble is that every local player is beginning to think that the SSD will be to Armada what the Raider was to XWMG. As of right now the evidence provided is that it will be - A must have to compete as Imps that is a huge cost barrier to entry. Watch for cards in the SSD to cost tons on markets like eBay like 3PO did.

The cure for that worry is to put out some ****** news about wave 8 showing that the $200 elephant in the room isn’t all that is coming.

That's exactly what I said. I totally agree.

Care to share what happened? X-Wing... MG? What does that stand for?

XWMG: X-Wing Miniatures Game

18 minutes ago, Cpt. Caine said:

Yeah. X-Wing was marketed for a while early on as X Wing Miniatures Game (XWMG) before it had enough market presence to be known as just Xwing.

I was mixing expansions a bit in my rant. The CR-90 came out with C-3P0 as a crew card that was almost meta-defining in Fat Han builds. So players were forced to purchase a $100 expansion that couldn’t be used in tournaments or even regular play for a single card. It was upwards of $50 for a copy on eBay.

The Raider was the second ship that did this same thing except with an upgrade to the TIE Advanced and Emperor Palpatine. The Emperor was a meta-defining card, the TIE Advanced upgrade was no joke either. It would be like finding out that pre-nerf Rieekan and Biggs were in a $200 epic Yavin base expansion that can only be played in 800 point games

Basically, I was aware of a lot of players who were furious that they had to fork over $100 again for competitive cards or pay big cost on secondary markets. A decent number walked away from the game because it felt like a short-sighted cash grab. A few others walked away because it created a second huge cost barrier to compete.
