FFG Mats ( do you roll them inwards or outwards )

By LostFleet, in Star Wars: Armada

after three years of debating I finally got my mats, one starfield, one Bespin,

Question is how should I roll them when I am storing, image facing inwards or outwards?

When it comes out of the factory box, its rolled inwards so that the image is in the inside face of the mat. However when I unfolded the mat, the edges seem to lift up and when you put two mats together both edges are sllightly tilted up and therefore dont connect.

Sounds like you should have gone the yoga mat route.

Mine tends to lay flat after a little bit of time (when I use it to play X-Wing, which is rare). You could just set the mats out (if you play in your home) an hour or so before playing and put a little weight on the corners. Or just roll the other way.

I find image out preserves them fairly well, and has the added benefit of being easier to put in the box.

Leaving them out should flatten out the corners, after that I roll mine image out and they unroll nicely.

I roll them with the image facing outwards, as this then causes them to lay flat when the image is faceup on the gaming table. This requires flipping the mat over after play to roll it back up.

If the image is facing inward when rolled, then once unrolled to play you'll get that slight curling of the edges like you've noted.

Rolling either way won't hurt the image of the mat (at least in my experience, and I've been rolling my two mats with image-outward for a few years now without any noticeable damage or wear).

I flip my mats over before I roll them. I can actually put two together into a single box that way, and they always lay flat.

I'm in favour of image out (although sadly I couldn't get a Bespin one and had to go with Hoth - the Bespin one is so pretty). So much easier to get them into the box (and out of it). I've had no problems with them not being flat - they seem to flatten fairly quickly.

Thank you for your advices,

Currently i am lying them flat, they just have few longitudinal wrinkles, i hope they will disappear by time. When i have to roll, I will do it image out, as all of you pointed out it makes more sense,

thanks again,

Typo

****. Guess I'm the only feeb who's been rolling them image inward xD But I haven't had any problem getting mine to lay flat.

I got a regular star field and the DS2 over Endor. I liked the green of endor better than the orange of bespin. The Hoth one couldve been really neat, but I didn't like being able to see atat tracks in the snow from space.

This is how I roll mine. Makes it fit in the box nice.

Between this and those new mats I really wish we were getting a 3 x 6 map.

Yep, shipping on them is semi crazytown.

I get your wish but I don't think that will happen. Right now mats can be used for X-wing or Armada, the 3x6 would only be used for Armada. Plus Legion, which doesn't have a 3x3 counterpart is getting 3x3 mats that you have to pair. It's not happening, from FFG anyway. The nice thing about how it's done now is you can have 1 starfield and multiple imaged mats and you can play the one you want without having multiple 3x6.

If anyone is in Nova Scotia and wants one in January (that they can confirm now) then PM me. We can cut out transatlantic postage.

That is the reason that I did not choose Hoth, for X-Wing it makes sense but for Armada At-Ats are too big. A friend of mine had Endor so I opted for Bespin which I love it.

As @Thrindal said, the fact that you can switch one if the mats is a good flexibility. I wish there were more mat options from FFG, Tatooine, Scarif, Jakku, Coruscant, Naboo ( oops no CW era yet). It shouldn't be that hard to develop and print a mat compared to miniatures.

I alternate

Scarif with Shield Gate or Jedha with the inverted Death Star are the top of my list of wants.

The only mats I don't have are Hoth and Star Killer base. Hoth for reasons already stated and Star Killer bas I didn't love, don't get me wrong, I liked the Movie just not Star Killer Base.

My question is, official mats or yoga mats?

Cool factor, FFG mats. For functionality and dual purpose of absorbing your sweat while contorting your body, Yoga Mats.

Yoga mats are significantly better to play on. FFG’s mats look **** good. To each there own but I went yoga and never regretted it. I actually marked out all relevant lines on the backside for learning to play

I roll out.
