Publishing modules

By jdmaze, in Genesys

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to ask if there are opportunities for publishing 3rd party adventure modules/books for the Genesys system. Specifically for FFG official supplements like Terrinoth or Android? Does FFG support 3rd party partnerships for this?

I've seen an adventure for Genesys Terrinoth downladable for free on DrivethruRPG.com, that doesn't seem to be published by FFG.

You should probably contact them directly. Unlike D&D, Genesys doesn’t have any type of OGL. If I was you, and had a top notch idea, I’d put together a 5-10 page sample, write up a good pitch, and inquire directly, as I really doubt they’ll address this on an open forum. If you aren’t trying to make money, you can just post it, lots of people are doing that already.

Anyhow, good luck. It would be nice if FFG would open this baby up some.

I actually do not advise this. Lots of companies will not read your content for legal reasons. If they were to produce something similar to your submission and they had also read your work, that could give you a grounds for a lawsuit.

How would you propose starting a business relationship? I guess one could just create content and hope to be approached but that’s pretty unlikely. The odds of FFG actually agreeing to a licensing deal are probably pretty low but I doubt you have any chance without communicating with them.

@AnomalousAuthor The adventure on DTRPG is published by FFG. As far as I know, FFG will hire freelance writers for 3rd party content like this. When they are looking they will have an email link available on the bottom of this page: https://www.asmodeena.com/en/careers/

I totally understand this. I didn’t mean he should post it on dtrpg, but this forum instead. Lots of people have posted great content on here for free, and FFG seems to be fully supportive of that.

From the OP’s post, it seemed as if they were inquiring about publishing a module as a 3rd party publisher, not as an in-house FFG writer or freelancer. I would think this would require a business arrangement with FFG for use of their IP. I’d imagine FFG would probably balk at the idea, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Can’t hurt to inquire, and see if a deal can be reached. Odds are it won’t, but I don’t have any clue to the kind of resources at the OPs disposal or their publishing history.

One thing to note, a system can’t be copyrighted, just the expression of said system. It would be entirely possible to sell a module that uses the system, just not any of the language, symbols, descriptions, trademarks, settings, characters, etc.

Now, I don’t know how you’d market it successfully, without mentioning Genesys or FFG, if you’re an independent publisher. That right there would limit the odds of success, but you never know.

If your talking about Croaking Sirocco, it was written by Kyle Carty (d.b.a. BestPalBrigade or "BPB"). It is a free product, and bears no legal notices indicating permission was recieved to use FFG's IP. It certainly wasn't published by FFG.

FFG appears to be willing to ignore noncommercial uses of their products, even blatent compilations of certain IP (namely Talents and Advesaries), but they don't seem to have any interest in letting third-parties directly monetize off of the ruleset. Thus why there's no OGL for Genesys, and why (IIRC) the person who was pay-walling content on Patreon was asked by FFG to cease and desist.

On the other hand... I recommend inquiring with FFG, they might be happy to have a third-party developing quality products for them. Or they'll politely refuse, and all you've lost is a little time. However do inquire first, don't just send them a multi-page proposal cold. As @kaosoe indicated, they'll reject it outright for legal reasons.

Finally, to paraphrase some advise I got from the creator of Adventure Time. 'Don't get too hung up on a given idea. You have no way of knowing if it will catch their interest, and you can always create another one.'

@Cantriped Oh, I'm sorry. I was not aware of that adventure. I had just assumed it was the Haunted City adventure. You are completely right.

Thanks for all the replies. I was more wondering about something like an OGL, which has been answered. I agree, I could contact FFG directly, but this was more a fact finding mission. I don't have anything specific at the moment.

Cheers!
