Is a Bonus attack still a primary attack?

By Tyhar7, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So in regards to the Starfortress.

If we use VTG and Finn, does Finn trigger in both attacks.

Both the forward primary and bow tie arcs count as primary weapons according to the rules ref.

I can't find anything in the rules ref to say a bonus attack can't be a primary attack. It infers a primary attack is one made with a primary weapon. As VTG is allowing you to attack from another primary weapon this seems logical that Finn can trigger but I want to be sure I'm not missing anything?

A bonus attack is just any attack that you perform outside of your normal attack during the Engagement phase at your turn during initiative.

A primary attack is an attack made using the attack value printed on the pilot-card (Or the 3-dice primary granted by the Moldy Crow title).

What @Innese said. Essentially, a bonus attack only describes the timing of the attack - something other than your standard Engagement. Some bonus attacks happen as part of the same engagement (like Cluster Missiles), while others happen at different times entirely (like Han Solo Rebel Crew Gunner). Sometimes, the bonus attack is restricted to a certain arc (like the Ghost's Locked & Loaded ability), or a certain type of upgrade (like IG-88B).

In this case yes the bonus attack being taken would be a primary but on e.g. a y wing or with cluster missiles it would not be.

Thanks guys. It was a little ambiguous and I wanted to be sure before I put it on the table.

So does this mean that the Ghost cannot triple tap during a single round?

Ghost with Ion turret + Han gunner and a docked shuttle.

Correct. Only one additional attack per round, regardless of source or phrasing.

Adding relevant entries from the Rules Reference (1.0.2) to @thespaceinvader 's answer:

p.23 in the FAQ section:

"Q: Is Han Solo [Rebel, Gunner]’s additional attack a bonus attack? A: Yes. Anything that permits an attack outside of the standard attack allowed to a ship when it engages is a bonus attack. "

And on p.6 there's a section for Bonus Attack that includes this point:

"• A ship can perform only one bonus attack per round. "

Ahhh, That stinks :)

I don't usually play Rebels, but am creating a list around the Ghost. I should just keep the shuttle undocked and fly it as a support ship for the Ghost.
