most schools are great tbh. it is only a few specific cases who are underwhelming. and yeah, all the crabs are really good.
Your School of Choice?

Meh. I hear shosuro are great friends to have. They cause problems to "melt away". I honestly get what you're saying. The infiltrator has several abilities they won't want to use infront of others, but I don't see this so much as "bad in a party", but instead it's "even better when they occasionally be off by themselves".
I got to play y kaito... the few invocations they get are extremely easy if they have that extra turn to cast them into the arrow....
I choose dragon. Those tattoo monks do all type of silly"enlighten" things, even being sword master"taoist... Its mirumoto with tattoos. I wish they henshin but i can wait.
My first character was a Asahina that went to the Kakita duelist school because he wasn’t a pacifist. He was great until he got 1-shorted by a super lucky Loyal Bushi.
My new character is a Togashi Monk, picker mostly to see if monks are any good. After 1 session I’m underwhelmed by him mechanically, but I do love pulling quotes from the list of zen sayings I made.

I had a monk that just made up sayings, and always concluded with "Shinsei said that."
My favorite one was: " Sorry is the man who cannot laugh; sorrier is the man who cannot laugh at himself."

Apparently that's a thing in-universe, too; a minor pastime of bored Dragon samurai is trying to convince people that traditions and sayings they've made up on the spot are 'legitimate' and seeing which ones actually catch on.
Most players I've ever come across with Togashi characters act like they're toting around a copy of The Big Book of Ancient, Semi-Coherent Wisdom .

My character in HoR is an Asahina who is a Kakita Duelist. Black Sheep, Idealist. A very fun character to play. In the big battle at GenCon 2018, before fighitng the Crab, she would give them the opportunity to surrender. In fact, at some point in EVERY fight, she gives the opposition a chance to surrender, because, while a Bushi's job is to kill, one should avoid needless killing. Of course, she has to be ordered to wear armour in situations where it would be appropriate(A Samurai should not be afraid of death...to wear armour is a sign of being afraid of injury), and, while courteous, she never lies(because a Samurai is Honest). She even does not wear the family mon, but, instead, the Kakita Dueling Academy Mon...because she does not wish to disrespect her family with the blood she sheds in the name of the Crane and the Empire. She is a fun, and tricky character to play, and I wish I could play her more often. But, she is also MUCH easier to build in the FFG system.
My Moto family meishodo wielder with high Water and Earth was fun. He doesn't carry a sword, but can cast Staff of the Sorcerer (Bo of Water) when needed and if he gets an opportunity he can summon up a scimitar on the spot. That and his high endurance make him a decent melee fighter. It was fun playing up some of his foreign habits too. Unfortunately, I've only been able to play him when one of my players takes a shot at running the game.
