Character Creator 1.0 - RESURRECTION

By player1405144, in Rogue Trader

Ok guys, I'm bringing this thing back if you're interested. Here is where it is, with version 1.1:

- Type in your starting stats and it will calculate total stats based on the following:

- Starting choices (Home world, Birthright, etc)

- Points spent in Characteristic Advancements

- Tracks skill training and talents that are gained from Career and other starting choices

- Creates a "character sheet" that you can view in Excel (perhaps Open Office)

- Does NOT have fully implemented career paths (this is a HUGE undertaking and will be awhile before it's completed)

- Automatically reveals or hides tabs that don't apply to you

All in all, it's pretty handy for generating a starting character, but it needs to have all of the careers built in, which will be awhile. What do you think?

Hey,

This is coming along nicely. I look forward to using it in my game...

Here is an update, still in progress.

Ok, here is another version, 1.1 I guess.

As far as changes, I have added tabs for all the career paths, and the check boxes to upgrade your stats are now functional. They increase stats accordingly and also calculate into the XP on the character sheet. Nothing else on the career sheet works, but I will work on implementing that all as well. I also added a feature that will auto-hide all the other career path tabs once you select a career on the front sheet, so you won't have to scroll through all the tabs to get to your character's career.

I see a lot of people checking this out, so someone comment already! Suggestions, tips, ideas, a thank you, anything at all!

Have you considered using several nested IF statements to create down boxes that conform to the choices made in earlier downs?

There might also be another way to do it such that choices that should not be made are not offered. Is this something you want to do? Or are you like me and just keeping it simple until it works then get fancy? gui%C3%B1o.gif

Are you using a macro to hide the tabs? If yes, can I have a copy of the code? If not, how are you doing it?

I noticed the file size is over 5 meg now. Is this due to use of a high quality jpeg as the character sheet background?

Coming along well

I have thought about it, but figured it works well enough for now. I think all the boxes are set up to not do anything unless the previous boxes match (ie: you can't take a Death World second choice if you didn't choose Death World as your home world). You are right, I am trying to get all the data put in and working before I worry about all those other changes I have planned.

I do have a VB code plugged in for hiding the tabs. I will post it when I have a chance.

As for the file size, it is possibly because I wanted a real character sheet on the screen, and most likely simply due to the massive amount of data that has to be typed in, calculated, combined, and relocated. The ship builder that bobh has made is a much smaller endeavor, simply because the number of skills, talents, ability scores, and options available is vastly higher than in making a ship.

I am working on the next version. Some notes on the new version:

1. Rank 1 for all careers will be functional, with XP calculation, stat calculation, and skill/talent options showing on the character sheet.

2. I have added "Special Abilities" for each career on the character sheet, so when you your career, you will also have the special ability listed.

3. Worked out a temporary solution for all the skill groups, so for the most part you will be able to see your Common Lore, Scholastic Lore, etc. on the character sheet.

Thanks for comments, keep them coming. I am doing this for everyone's sake, and I would love some feedback or suggestions. I am a novice as far as spreadsheets go, but I am sure as hell trying.

Looking forward to the next version - so far so good!

Good work Scrow.

I wondered how you got hold of the image backdrops, are they available as jpegs somewhere? If not, could you make them available?

Having played with Excel a bit myself I wondered how you planned to make the backdrops print out. As far as I am aware they as screen only and will not print.

Does it work on Linux ?

Hey there,

very nice! I've just created a Ship maker this weekend myself but didn't quite know how to start with a character sheet. I especially like the "Character Sheet page 1". Allways wanted to do something like this, but don't know how.

Perhaps i have a tip for you, for your drop-down lists on the Starting choices. You could use the command "=indirect(C3)" for the down in D3. You have to give a name to your lists, for example: you make a list with the +3 WS, +3 BS, +3 Strength... for a forge World character. Then you name that list "ForgeWorld" (be carefull you have to name it "ForgeWorld" or "Forge_World" not "Forge World"!). When you have this command in the drop-down List in D3: "=indirct(C3)" (i think it's "indirect" in english, but you'll better check that) the drop-down list in D3 will only consist of +3 WS, +3 BS...

Perhaps this will solve your "not all boxes will apply"-"Problem".

So, thanks and go on! Very nice!

Sorry I disappeared for so long guys. Anyone still interested in this project? Here is the current version, and I'd be happy to get back to work if anyone wants to use it!

If you guys DO want me to work on it again, I need your input! What do you want to see implemented next?

Ok, updates I am implementing as of now:

1. "Special Abilities" from your Career choice are now listed on the Character Sheet

2. Rogue Trader Career now has working Ranks 1 and 2

3. Added room for players to add notes to the sheet (to cover things the Builder can't accommodate).

Things in the process of implementing before version 1.2 is released:

1. Functional Ranks 1 and 2 for each Career

2. Support for skill groups, so skills such as "Common Lore (Imperium) will be listed. Still not sure the best way to do this, but working on it.

As of yet, the Character Sheet is still only the first page. I will eventually add the second page, and I might even add weapons/armor selections, but I may just make these blank and let you fill them in, depending how much mindless data-entry I feel up to.

Come on people! I have to know people want this before I get too much further with it!

EDIT: Anyone have a site that they can host this file on, so it's not on stupid Megaupload? Something that people can quickly download and use?
