I feel like Legion minis don't photograph well...

By Lord Ashram, in Star Wars: Legion

I know this might sound strange, but I feel like a number of the minis look WAY better in person than they do in photos.

I got Han Solo, and it looks WAY more like Harrison than the photos I've seen.

Same with Boba Fett; I feel like his position looks awkward in photos, but sharp in person.

Stormtroopers feel the same... like, the photos don't make them look as thick and armored as they do in person.

Anyone else find that the figures look way better in person than photos, or am I crazy?

I agree. I feel like lighting and perspective have a lot to do with it. Maybe even depth perception.

Makes sense.. there are a lot of dynamic poses with arms sticking out... its hard to get a shot of the best angle of the face while showcasing the arms and body position, you know?

Some of the photos aren’t the final mini.

Oh, no no, even when *I* photograph them they look better in person, you know? And while a certain amount of that is understandable, I do feel like the Legion figures in particular suffer from it.

Ah, I misunderstood. I haven’t taken any photos, so that’s my only real comparison :)

It’s because most miniature companies do terrible jobs of photographing their models. They don’t hire professional photographers and instead take the photos themselves. The result is awkward angles, poor lighting for the paint, etc...

You think? I know GW tends to have nice photos... but they are, to put it mildly, experienced at this:)

I agree about depth perception having something to do with it. I've also noticed that my models look worse in photos because it lets you see all the little painting mistakes.

Yes and no. They do have some nice photos. But they have a lot of bad ones too.

Good light and white background help always a lot too to get most out of the photos, decent camera doesn't hurt either, but iphone etc. new phones do have pretty good cameras in good light.

My painting again looks pretty whack so that's what is the real problem, when taking good photos of badly painted minis heh...

I do think FFG doesn't seem to use a professional-level photographer for their articles (and there absolutely may be some prototype sculpts in there). Even in person, everyone I've shown it to agrees Han is a turd of a sculpt.

It really is all about the lighting. Just cause there is a camera on everyone's phone doesn't mean everyone is a photographer. There is a skill set to be learned there to get great photos.

The paint job the official Han model got doesn’t help either.
