probably a bad idea but... (4x Rebel list)

By Surak, in X-Wing Squad Lists

ok, so I've been trying to theory-craft something both fun and at least likely effective for Rebels, and in my testing I've found the K-wing to be a passable gunboat in its new form.

so in the full tradition of my list building, I've taken the concept to the logical extreme.

BTL-S8 K-wing - Warden Squadron Pilot - 50
Warden Squadron Pilot - (40)
Tactical Scrambler (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

BTL-S8 K-wing - Warden Squadron Pilot - 50
Warden Squadron Pilot - (40)
Tactical Scrambler (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

BTL-S8 K-wing - Warden Squadron Pilot - 50
Warden Squadron Pilot - (40)
Tactical Scrambler (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

so hive-mind, what do we think of my latest foray into madness?

Tactical Scrambler probably needs to seen in action. I don't know how strong it'd be. I had a friend who ran 3x Resistance Bombers back in 1e, and it added a bunch there, but they were probably better blockers, and bigger bases.

Veteran Turret Gunner likewise. Split-arc attacks aren't ideal, but it's still potentially two attacks. It's just a question of how often they'll trigger. I think most folks don't have a good feel for that.

So, what are other options?

  • Option One is Barrage Rockets. Drop the gunners for them, and you'd have an opening salvo of 12 dice. Not too bad. If the Tactical Scramblers don't add much, toss on some bombs.
  • Option Two is five K-Wings. I mean, that's an extra 25% hit points, and 5 attacks instead of 4. Depending on how often VTG triggers, and how good Tactical Scrambler is, the math might just be better on five ships.

Barrage rockets are unfortunately not an option as I don't actually have any copies of that card, as I don't own any Imperials, but I certainly would try it if I could.

5 Wardens is REALLY tempting, it's exactly the sort of crazy that I like to try, and with that many arcs to spin around something is bound to end up in at least one of them :)

Why not just Proxy Barrage? If not, I definitely second the 5 Ks

I mean, most folks would fly casual and let you proxy them. I know if I wanted to fly the list in a tournament, I'd almost surely be able to borrow enough Barrage Rockets from other friends in my area.

I think the problem with this list is that you can build a similar, but potentially much stronger, Y-Wing;

Gray Squadron Bomber, R4 Astromech, Dorsal Turret, Veteran Turret Gunner and a Shield Upgrade is also 50 points, and gives you a range 1-2 double-tap in the forward arc.

I think K-Wings really need a bomb-based build, to get the best use of Slam, and/or Ordnance to provide some reliable damage output!

don't worry, both quad and quint Y-wings are also on my radar :)

the reason for the big squadron of K-wings (other than madness) is I've actually being getting some good mileage out of Esege and a Warden setup as gunships as part of a mixed squadron (KKXY, and KKYY) and quite often it was the K-wings pulling the majority of the weight so I thought I'd double down on the idea just for the **** of it :)

in any case I've been able to secure an extra K-wing dial for Thursday games night so I'm aiming to get the 5x variant on the table and report back 😛

necro'ing this now we have the new points :)
