S-Foils Opening/Closing

By Stankham, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can an X-wing only open/close its S-foils once during the “Before Activation” window?

Example of Possible Idea: Close S-Foils, Supernatural Boost, Open S-Foils, Reveal Dial and Activate.

Consensus is that opening or closing S-Foils is a once-per-opportunity trigger, so your example wouldn't be legal.

Fig is correct.

However, if your foils were already closed then Supernatural Boost into open foils would work fine.

Firstly I think ffg should have put tokens in starter and blister sets to show s foils closed and open. Same with uwing

Second kullbee sperado xwing pilot ability is you can flip sfoils after you boost or barrel roll. Its I4 I'm unsure if you could link to red focus then flip.

So have closed move reposition closer then open for more red dice.

This is correct.

Open S-Foils from the previous round. As he activates, closes S-Foils, moves, focus/boost open S-Foils.

Is great fun, even more so with some ability to have gained a Lock beforehand.

The takeaway here is that any triggered ability can only happen once per opportunity . What constitutes an opportunity? In the case of S-Foils:

  • Per the card itself, it can change position (open to closed, or vice versa) before you activate . This basically means, right before you flip your dial and move your ship.
    • (If there was somehow a way to activate twice in a round - which there currently isn't - you could technically change your S-Foils each time you activate.)
  • Kullbee Sperado can also change S-Foils each time he performs a boost or barrel roll action . That means he could start the round with open S-Foils, close then before his activation, move, then boost as an action... this would allow him to immediately re-open the S-Foils. If he were later coordinated to perform another action, he could barrel roll and close his S-Foils yet again.

In the tournament games I've played people told me not to flip the cards, but just tell me. In games at my home I use the old target lock tokens to indicate open foils.

I think a double sided token would be best. Also to remind the player to declare in time (before activation).

Many 3rd party acrylic suppliers sell these. If that's your thing. I've got 2 that I use from a guy on Facebook who runs Buy the Same Token.

Token is best we have to play our list not the opponents to. I think a quarter is good heads open tails closed. I say place dials and say are you ready give them time.
