they have a mix. They learned during WWI and endured after. Search for the company: Bloch, Dewoitine, Potez, Amiot, Breguet, Latecoere, Liore et Holivier. Those are the first ones who came to my mind. Some of the machines were quite good in the interwar period, but they ceased to improve them, and find that the enemy have not. The same of US fighters, which were rapidly improved by experiences from Eu Front volunteers and Asian Flying Tigers Squadron. For Italian Regio Aeronautica you could figure that we have very good pilots, but old machines, and nothing in embarked air forces. So we suffered a lot in designs, with the best coming at the very last period of the war, too late to make a difference.

Hmm. I can sort of see it. The G1-M4-C might be a good simile for a MIG 7 or 9.

Slow day at work, here´s my take on this subject:

TIE Fighters are clearly Bf 109 E, fast and agile, but lacking a bit in firepower.
TIE Advanced = Bf 109 K-4, more powerful armament.

TIE Interceptor would be FW 190 A-8. Fast and made for hit and run attacks.

TIE Defender = Me 262, the most advanced fighter Empire has.

Rebels:
Headhunters are Hurricanes, the workhorses.

Arc = Il-2 Sturmovik, tanks with gunners.
X-Wing = P40 E-1 Kittyhawk, good all-rounder.

A-Wing = Spitfire V B, fast and agile.

B-Wing = P47 Thunderbolt. Large, hits hard.

Now that there are new factions out since i started this. I do wonder what the new ships would most closely resemble?

I´d say Separatist ships are Japanese fighters, the Vulture would be A6M "Zero". Fast, Agile and all for one cause.

For the Republic… maybe U.S. Air Force during WW2? Clearly Rebels are all the Allies.

Would that make the N1 a 262? At least in legends they were manufactured buy the same people as the Scurrg.

I'd agree. The second film, after all, opens with them flying escort to a big silver thing, which was basically the mustang's reason for existing.

The Y-wing - especially Clone Wars Y-wings which used their top turrets in a dogfight - could be seen as something inspired by the Bolton Paul Defiant (I know that had no forward guns but that's no big deal when you don't have to worry about the engineering of how it carries them, and besides the Y-wing's forward guns aren't exactly much to write home about)

Y-wings, despite not being on a medium base, are absolutely perfect for a B-25 Mitchell.

The ARC-170 is based on the P-61 Black Widow.

The Il-2 was actually surprising maneuverable, due to it’s huge wings. And only the Il-2M had a rear-gunner. I would say the Il-2 is better matched with the B-Wing, if you replace the “ground” with “capital ship”.

The silhouette of the P-61 definitely resembles the ARC-170 more, and has a comparable crew-setup.

One of the best night/heavy fighters in the Allies' arsenal in WW2...

Edit: chop off the tail booms and mount a pair of cannons on the wing tips and it is a dead ringer for the ARC-170 in profile...

They are a sight to look at in person too.

Did it see much operational use? I would count only those which were used in combat, more than few times. I mean Gloster Meteor is Allied jet fighter, but it really did not see much action due to late entry and few planes.

Nope, you guys are right, the P-61 is a dead ringer... I thought I read they used the B-17 for the base of the Arc-170, but yeah that P-61 is right on.
