Hatin’ Kanan (Legends Never Die)

By SpiderMana, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I decided to build a Kanan/Luke list yesterday, because Kanan's ability in addition to Luke's makes him pretty tanky. I flew the two of them naked with Ezra in a TIE for one of my first 2.0 matches, to try out the Force Pilots, and it was decently fun. But then we found out that the dark side force power "Hate" regens you force tokens when you take damage.

VCX-100 Light Freighter - •Kanan Jarrus - 130
•Kanan Jarrus - Spectre-1 (90)
Dorsal Turret (4)
•Maul (13)
•Chewbacca (5)
•Ezra Bridger (18)

T-65 X-wing - •Luke Skywalker - 62
•Luke Skywalker - Red Five (62)
Servomotor S-foils (Closed) (0)

Total: 192/200

So here's the list I've modified to equip Hate on Kanan. :D I left 8 points for Hate, only throwing Chewie in there on top of the essentials (turret to help Kanan's ability proc more easily, as well as making the most of Ezra's ability.), because without some sort of tanky crew Kanan is likely to die pretty horribly.

Let's be real, he still is.

But. Every time he takes damage (presumably to hull? I can't recall exactly how damage is worded in the rules), he can regen up to four force tokens. These can depower shots against Luke, or be used as dice modifications on a double-tap attack. Even at range 2, if you have the turret and front arc both lined up, you get to shoot with four dice before the 2-die attack, giving you pretty good odds of token-stripping.

Damage

Damage represents the amount of structural damage a ship can take. Damage is tracked by damage cards. A ship is destroyed when the number of damage cards it has is equal to or greater than its hull value.

There are two types of damage: (regular) damage and (critical) damage. When a ship suffers damage, that damage is suffered one at a time. For each damage a ship suffers, it loses a shield by flipping the shield to its inactive side. If it does not have an active shield remaining, it is dealt a damage card instead. For damage, the card is dealt facedown ; for damage, the card is dealt faceup and its text is resolved. All damage is suffered before damage.

A ship is DAMAGED while it has at least one damage card. A ship is CRITICALLY DAMAGED while it has at least one faceup damage card.

  • If an effect instructs a player to deal a damage card to a ship, this is different from the ship suffering damage. The card is dealt to the ship regardless of whether the ship has any active shields.
  • When a ship suffers damage or otherwise is dealt damage cards that would cause it to exceed its hull value, the excess damage cards are still dealt.

Formatting got wonky, so double quote. :) It looks like every time you loose a shield or are delt a damage card you are "accepting" (to use your translated wording of the Polish card) damage.

I hope you’re right and Hate is 5 points. It would be like a sign from FFG.

...Assuming Luke doesn’t go up in points 😂

Nice list! Where did you find the Hate upgrade? I didn't see it in the CW wave III preview.

It’s half-visible in the spread for the Sith Infiltrator. Someone spoiled the rest of the text on Reddit, he’s got his First Order conversion kit already (I believe it’s out in Poland, they had their tournament just now or something?)

There are a couple threads about it all on the main page.

This is really cool. Kanan is deffienently going to regen alot of force.

The more i think about it tho, he is gonna have trouble spending all that force. No one will shoot luke first considering kanans ability. You cant use force on defence (unless at range 3). Its gonna be tough to line up that primary arc at initiative 3 so u can spend those force tokens to modify your attack and proc ezras ability. Thats the inherant problem of the ghost. Its got a big primary and it pays for it. It has no boost or barrel roll so dodging its primary arc is pretty easy especially for higher initiative ships.

Still will be pretty cool for a couple turns spending and regenning a 4 force pool. I cant see it surviving much longer then a couple turns tho :(

Will I fly it competitively? Not likely, unless i5 aces are hit with a points boost like everyone’s crying for. Will I try it out just to see how deliciously janky it gets? **** right.

Edit: Or hey, if anything in this list is reduced enough, I can throw Sense on Luke or something, so Kanan can know where to aim his turret or reinforce or stuff. Idk, it’s a thought.

(If you click the link you’ll see I proxies Heightened Perception for Hate).

Is it worse with Saw instead of Chewie? You bet. Will it be an absolute beast for the one engagement phase it might survive through? Ooooooh boy you better believe it.

I've flown a fairly different Kanan/Luke, and call it "Jedi Sacrifice."

  • Luke (Supernatural Reflexes, R2-D2, Proton Torpedo, S-Foils) 91
  • Kanan (Heightened Perception, Dorsal Turret, Magva Yarro, Jyn Erso, Shield Upgrade) 109

The premise is that, unless it really looks like Luke is the opponent's target and Kanan can take a Lock, to let Kanan reinforce, and then fire back with a 4-dice Lock+Force attack. Luke gets his double-mod Torpedo off, and that's a decent first round. Next round, perhaps at Range 1, Kanan has another big attack ramped up to Init 7 to ideally put the kill on something.

Now, I don't want to say that Ezra/Maul/Hate is bad, but it's a really expensive combo. Ezra is 10 points more than Veteran Turret Gunner, and Maul is an extra 13. Low-upgrade Luke is probably fine, but 23 points gets him a lot of toys, and how many force points can you even spend?

So... shooting the difference...

Let's drop the Proton Torpedo from Luke for Veteran Turret Gunner. An extra attack with Kanan has potential. Full R2-D2 is probably a waste, so drop to a regular R2 Astromech. Perhaps upgrade Dorsal Turret to Ion Cannon Turret? It's more likely to get the first point of damage through than the 2-dice pea-shooter.

  • Luke (Supernatural Reflexes, R2 Astromech, S-Foils) 80
  • Kanan (Heightened Perception, Ion Cannon Turret, Magva Yarro, Jyn Erso, Veteran Turret Gunner, Shield Upgrade) 119

On the other hand, how easy will it be to get two attacks with Kanan? He needs to have firing arc on the friendly ship, so unless Luke is flying really far up, Kanan has to have his arc to the side. So can he reliably have a double-tap?

@theBitterFig

Yeah I’m mostly looking for jank here. I did consider Hera crew to help with getting double-taps or Kanan’s ability. Jyn for extra-tanky Luke would be nice, too.

I’ve officially renamed this list “Hatin’ Kanan” in the app. Swapped him back to shield upgrade and Magva.

If you hadn’t figured it out yet, you want to shoot Kanan first. So I think I might swap Magva (and shield) out for a torp on Luke. Because ideal round one is for Luke to fly out front, Kanan spend the force on his pilot ability to keep Luke alive more easily, and for Luke to torp some poor soul at R3 would really help make that round go better for me.

My friend, however, decided to shoot at Luke first. I only got the double-tap lined up once for Kanan, but Luke couldn’t die. He got one lucky shot through to take Luke’s shield, but that was all he ever did to Luke. By the time he switched to shooting Kanan, it was too late, even for 3 Fangs and Drea.
