I dunno, that doesn't feel powerful enough to me - wouldn't you always just want to save those force tokens to use as normal forcus after rolling when you have more information? What if you got the chance to add the extra die after rolling?

Depends if it'll increase the chance at removing a ship or not and the risk to your ship.

We're just talking about defensive bonus I think.

Spend a Force Point to gain a range bonus, maybe? Can't double it to get the 5th die, but then at r1-2 you have to manage your resources. I could see that working for a ship ability, and I don't feel like it treads too closely on the Grand Inky, as it adds instead of negating a range bonus.

This is something that on its face looks balanced, your adding 3/8 of an evade straight up, and 5/8 if you have a focus or extra force (a full evade if you have an evade token and nothing better to spend it on). My main concern is that it's something that consumes a limited resource for Jedi, and works best when you already have lots of defensive resources. In other words it's going to make a good defensive situation better more so than it's going to make a bad defensive average. Which on a ship that we expect to have at least 3 Agility and only 3 to 4 hull, the scary situation isn't the good one, it's the bad one since you could get insta-killed pretty easily.

Do you guys think a once per turn effect to spend a Force like an evade would be too powerful? Or maybe just the defensive half of Rey's ability with a different conditional?

Nope
