There's nothing particularly poor about any of your choices. However, your ships are awfully heavily loaded. I, for one, would ditch the R5, the R2, the Hull and Shield Upgrades, and also either ditch the torps or downgrade the Red to a Rookie, and then include a 4th ship. All those upgrades seem less than potent on a list where there aren't plentiful mods - with simple ships, you want more rather than heavier imo

No worries Greebwahn good advise, I’ll mske some changes.

Apart from kitchen table battles with my son, it’ll be my first ‘real’ game

As Greebwahn said - go minimal upgrades in your early games and just get a better feel for flying and the game mechanics then introduce upgrades as you go.

I have played lots of wargames in the past but when I first stared X-Wing (I was a bit late to the party) I found it easy to build on my knowledge bit by bit.

Hugeman, yes I’ve reading, studying rules & cards & upgrades and it, at times it is overwhelming.

I’ll fly cheap, easy and probably loose with the biggest smile on my face

If you can thin the upgrades down and either fit Thane in the xwing or dutch with proton torps in the y as the fourth ship it should be good.

This is top advice and happily, even more on point in 2.0. Manoeuvring is key now and upgrades are not the essentials they used to be.

You'll improve your understanding of the gameplay massively by flying with just a few upgrades in your list and concentrating on pure positioning. X Wings are a good start :)

Thanks guys for all of the advise

I’ll post in update on how I go
