Let’s talk about the SSD since FFG won’t.

By Bakura83, in Star Wars: Armada

Ok. So we know very little yet, but humour me. Or don’t. Your call.

1) Would you prefer to run a loaded SSD and only a few squadrons/small ship or a bare bones one with lots of other stuff? Feel free to hypothesise anything we don’t know to fit your ideal preference.

2) Are you excited about the idea of Epic Armada, or do you think it will be too cumbersome? Have Epic X-Wing experiences had a factor in your answer?

3) If you are not planning on buying one, why? What type of upgrade would make it a must buy for you?

4) Is there anything we know for sure that is coming with the SSD you didn’t want?

5) Is there anything we know for sure that isn’t coming with the SSD you would definitely included with it if it was up to you?

6) Should standard play go from 400pts to 500pts (or more) in a huge ship world?

7) Have you preordered your SSD yet? How many?

😎 What household accident is most likely to destroy your SSD?

9) What specific day will our next article land? There might be a prize.

10) What huge ship could they release next at the same price that would be an auto buy for you?

Edited by Bakura83

1 ) Upgrades, upgrades, and more upgrades. You've sunk more than half your fleet points into it, so DCO? QBTs? 3 attack Gunnery Team? All waaaaay better value than they would normally be.

2 ) I am, but the hard part is finding someone else who also wants to play a longer game of Armada.

3 ) N/A

4 ) Nope.

5 ) Still waiting on my Death Trooper boarding team...

6 ) Why? Too much of this game is built around 400 points and would need rebalancing.

7 ) Nope.

8 ) Oh God... Swooshing it around and dropping it.

9 ) Tuesday, December 12th.

10 ) The Subjugator-class (Malevolence and Devastation) or the Lucrehulk.

Edited by The Jabbawookie

10) When Armada 2.0 is released with CW factions, the Malevolence will be a great Huge ship.

+1. Yes please.

Point-Defense Reroute.

1) As soon as I get SSD I'm taking it to some local store tournament at least once! Most likely it will be fully loaded SSD (DCO, GT, LS, etc) with Piett, gozanti with coms net (for triggering Piett) and some TIE.

2) Yes, I'm excited. But we already have All-out offensive from CC. I played it few times with friends as standalone battle. Works great. I haven't played too much X-wing and I never played Epic X-wing.

3) N/A

4) Point-Defence Re-route...

5) Not really.

6) No, I believe 400 pts is OK. More points would mean longer games during tournaments. When you play casually with your mates you can do whatever you want anyway.

7) Not yet. Waiting for articles!

😎 That shall never happen.

9) I call Thursday 22nd November (I'm optimist).

10) Nothing is auto buy for me. I can live in the world where SSD is the only huge ship. It would make sense. But Malevolence sounds like fun. And I think it is hard to say without playtesting if Lucrehulk should be large or huge.

7) To wife: No, NOOOOOOO. God, what do you think?

7b) To fellow Admirals: Sure thing! Really looking forward to it and can't wait to swooosh it through the house (* see @The Jabbawookie for details on 8 ;))

1) I want to run it solo if I can with lots of squadrons, maybe one flotilla.

2) Definitely excites, but my group moaned about all-out Assault being too long so I’m worried they won’t want too.

3) N/A

4) Too many titles?

5) 6 Squadron rating

6) Probably not.

7) Yes. 1. I was given the option of 2 and a divorce or 1 and status quo. We also had to get a new kitchen.

😎 Knocked off a shelf in our tiny house. ☹️ Just like the Ninjago Legion Temple.

9) I’ve retired from this.

10) The Eclipse. With young sexy clone Palpatine from Legends.

Edited by Bakura83

1) I will probably only run the ship once or twice, but I think this is the build I will try first, with what information we have.

SSD Command Prototype (220)
• Moff Jerjerrod (23)
• Captain Brunson (5)
• Damage Control Officer (5)
• Wulff Yularen (7)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Intensify Firepower! (6)
• Leading Shots (4)
• Quad Battery Turrets (5)
= 282 Points

Arquitens Light Cruiser (54)
• Dual Turbolaser Turrets (5)
= 59 Points

Arquitens Light Cruiser (54)
• Dual Turbolaser Turrets (5)
= 59 Points

Squadrons:
= 0 Points

Total Points: 400

2) I am semi excited about it mostly been wanting to run a narrative campaign and epic play might help with some rule sets.

3) already pre-order.

4) I really don't want the SSD to be absolutely top tier, I don't think it will happen, I just really don't want the competitive meta to devole into can I kill the SSD, I am fine with some SSD lists, but I want the meta to still be diverse.

5) something for the rebels alongside this I'm primarily an Imperal player, but I do feel bad for the rebel players in my community.

6) only if they add a rule saying you have to take at least 30-40 points in squadrons minimum, and only one huge ship per fleet, to help with balance issues.

7) yes just 1

😎 a simple dropping of it, not to mention storage issues that may lead to a fall or something.

9) I feel that we will get one every month until about March April time so I expect our next article in December, probably the second or third week.

10) really anyship as long as it comes with unique upgrades.

I am not excited about the SSD, as I feel it will cause one of two things. People who love the SSD might join the game and use it. Cool, more players, and maybe they will move away from the SSD and do other stuff... but a 280 dollar investment into the game is a big one, so expect to see a lot of new, OT lovers, joining the game for the SSD and using that for a while.

Then, you have the other issue, where people will see it, and if its good see it often, then not get into the game because the 'best' ship is $200.

point defense reroute? Seriously?

Ugh....

they should just combine it with QLT and make it cost 7 points. Giving us this useless card is kind of an insult at this point.

Also, yes the game should go up to 500 pts. But I think that because I like the number 500 more than 400. Because its easy to tell a new gamer, "Yeah, build for 500pts." And not have to answer questions about why only 400...

How much *can* you build this out defensively?

Like...assuming you bring a max 134 pts squadron, can you fortress enough points into this single ship to viably run a one-ship list?

You don’t have much... But it’s not going to stop me from trying 1-ship Sloane. Turning? Noooo.... Who needs that?

I would love the Eclipse but I’m sad because FFG will never make it 😢

I think it's obvious when the SSD will arrive, by the way...

Quote

Look for the Super Star Destroyer Expansion Pack (SWM20) early in the first quarter of 2019...

Noting that Regionals at the FF Game Center are scheduled for 1/26, I would say Thursday, 1/17 will be the drop date for the SSD. They did the same last year for the FF Games Center Store Champs: Profundity/Chimaera came out the week before.

Executor is coming...

1) Would you prefer to run a loaded SSD and only a few squadrons/small ship or a bare bones one with lots of other stuff? Feel free to hypothesise anything we don’t know to fit your ideal preference.

I'd probably run it with a fair number of upgrades, I think it'll work out best treating it as a fortress more than a ship.

2) Are you excited about the idea of Epic Armada, or do you think it will be too cumbersome? Have Epic X-Wing experiences had a factor in your answer?

I guess, I like the game as is though.

3) If you are not planning on buying one, why? What type of upgrade would make it a must buy for you?

I do not plan on getting one, I'm too exclusively a rebel player to make it work my while.

4) Is there anything we know for sure that is coming with the SSD you didn’t want?

I wish it didn't have built in strategic adviser and raymus antilles that seems a bit much.

5) Is there anything we know for sure that isn’t coming with the SSD you would definitely included with it if it was up to you?

A commander for and the option to use it a rebel ship

6) Should standard play go from 400pts to 500pts (or more) in a huge ship world?

No 400 works well and the game is balanced for it, finishing your game on time at tournament or if you're strapped for time on the weekend especially with squadrons and/or a highly contemplative opponent is hard enough as it is. 500 would also lead to sloppier play as the effects of mistakes would be mitigated by it.

7) Have you preordered your SSD yet? How many?

No

😎 What household accident is most likely to destroy your SSD?

Kids fighting over who gets to play for it. Seriously, they should offer insurance on it.

9) What specific day will our next article land? There might be a prize.

12/10

10) What huge ship could they release next at the same price that would be an auto buy for you?

There will not be another huge ship. You can have a small or medium ship that's relatively obscure but beyond that it becomes way too much of a financial risk. All of the large ships are highly recognizable and appeared in at least one galactic civil war era movie. There is no comparable rebel ship, or any ship really, of a similar scale to the SSD that meet those criteria.

Tough to say we know only two varieties can be used in a 400 point game so we are probably going to get a point increase. I agree more boarding parties would be nice

Going to get one as I made my second silly life goal to get every armada expansion (the first being to eat fried chicken in every country I visit and so far have done so in all 8 countries I have been in including my home of the USA)

5) Wave 8 😄.

While I will admit it's a bad card, I have been going through old cards and cards that have not seen the light of day for some time and see if I can find a use for them, and I found this build for PDR that is kinda okay.

Imperial II (120)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Point-Defense Reroute (5)
• Leading Shots (4)
• H9 Turbolasers (8)
= 144 Points

It's far from amazing, but if you are dealing with Sloan scatter aces, or scatter aces in general you can pair this with Mauler, and you're locking down the scatter with h9s, pdr acts more as Insurance for that hit you need to pair with your accuracy, but you can melt Sloan squadrons pretty fast with this ship paired with Mauler, again not amazing but pretty good.

The question is, why bother with PDR when you can QLT instead and shoot back when they shoot at you?

Thats the choice most make.

With Kallus.

@Drasnighta fair point, but you could take ews so they can't shoot at you, and then you have pdr for insurance, like I said it's not an amazing build, but I do think it's probably the best build for pdr.

I won’t disagree - it’s just a shame that the best for PDR is still under some of the worst for its alternatives... Which is the crux of its issue 🙂

The only problem I have with the SSD being an awesome model is the other ships for the game I could get for the same price.

I have about half the materials I want for this game, and even with Miniaturemarket's $150 preorder price for it, that's the same cost as the Chimera, Raddus, Imp Squadrons 2, Reb Squadrons 2, and a Interdictor.

1) Loaded

2) Really excited about epic, but more excited about a narrative campaign surrounding the SSD

3) N/A

4) No

5) Would be open to a Lusankya title for the SSD that could only be used by Rebels, which would give those playing only that faction a reason to buy it and not be pissed if the SSD turns out to be Wave 8.

6) No. As much as I enjoying crushing opponents with my CC fleet, I think it should stay at 400 points, if anything to not increase the time it takes to play a match.

7) Yes, two of them (my FLGS was selling them for pre-order for $124.99, so at looked at the second one as really only costing me $50)

8 ) My daughters are probably going to crash something into it or use it as a lawn dart. Instead of being mad, I will be quite proud if they manage to destroy it with an A-Wing.

9) There are going to be more Armada articles? Huh... didn't expect that... December 16th, 2018.

10) Nothing. I honestly prefer the SSD to by the only huge ship in Armada 1.0.
