If I fly into an asteroid or a proximity mine and have to roll attack dice, do I also roll defense dice?
The rules don't say I do, so I haven't been.

No you don't.
it's not an attack, just an effect. you only resolve the effect. no green dice are involved when resolving the effects of overlapping an obstacle currently.

if you take damage from an obstacle, that damage is dealt as normal. if you have shields left, they are used before dealing any damage cards to the ship that suffers the effect.
