33 Card Format?

By ImperatorThax, in KeyForge

I started thinking after I misplaced and then found a card from one of my decks. There are going to be a lot of decks missing 1, 2, or 3 cards that people will want to play. So what if we created a variant format based on cutting 3 cards from your deck?

Everything would be done normally except that you remove 3 cards from your deck before the event and play with 33 cards. This allows decks that are missing a small number of cards to have a format they are legal in and introduces a tiny amount of deck building without compromising KeyForge's philosophy. It also allows people to get rid of a particular card they find annoying and provides an alternate way to voluntarily balance decks in casual play. 3 should be a small enough number to allow people to lean their deck a little bit away from a house without avoiding downsides from doing so.

This is sure to be controversial and I want to know what you think. Is something like this an option or should all modification of decks be avoided?

(It would also be nice if down the road FFG sets up a system of printing lost or damaged cards to order. It could possibly be handled through the app and have a limit of up to 30 or so cards from the deck so you can't just order a copy of a deck.)

I ageee that card printing is an absolute must for replacing lost or damaged cards. That is my nightmare.

So you want to add an option to modify your deck.. in a game in which the entire point is that you must play your deck as it is, without modification?

I'm guessing part of the algorithm FFG has in place is to put weaker cards in with stronger ones. if you could cull your deck to take out the cards you don't like, you would swing the power balance of the deck. And I know you are thinking, 'yeah, that is part of the strategy' but that is the whole point. This game must be played as-is. If suddenly everyone is saying card X is bad and should be the first card you remove, then we are right back to the point Richard Garfield made when he said he designed all these cards for Magic, yet people weren't playing them because of the meta.

As for replacing damaged cards.. yeah, 100% agree there should be a way you can get a replacement for a card that is damaged. If the deck is registered to you, and you have the QR code, it honestly would be a very easy process to pull that card up for FFG. The only question is would it be cost prohibitive for them to print a single card. It will be interesting to see how this is handled with the inevitable damaged decks in the future. In the mean time, be careful with your cards.

I hear you, but let's not forget that a deck is $10. What's the incentive (to FFG) to allow for a replacement card to be printed? You don't but a new deck if you cherish your first deck so much that you're willing to buy replacement cards. I say, embrace the idea that occasionally, you're going to retire a deck.

Personally, I really like and embrace the nature of the game where I get to keep enjoying the thrill of opening a brand new deck. I get to keep enjoying the process of figuring out how to play a new deck. I get to know that the Meta will be evolving regularly, and that if I struggle against an opponent's deck, that's temporary too. It's even exciting that a deck could be lost or damaged and never recreated.

If my goal was attach myself to one deck and play until the cows come home, I'd pick another game. This isn't the game for a deck monogamist. Embrace the chaos!

go away.

You losing cards is on you. Thats not FFG’s, or any companies, responsibility. This game is bar none the easiest to keep said deck together because it’s literally designed in to the product.

Now if it where a printing error and it made it to you and you want a replacement thats another story. Then FFG would be the ones who need to work with your request.

I’ve been playing card games for 15~ years. I’ve never once lost a card.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative response so far, your idea isn't terrible. People are currently a little sensitive about modifying these decks in any way, but your idea is subtle and interesting.

I really like the idea of a "honed" format where players are allowed to remove 3 (or even 6) cards before the event.

One restriction I would add is that an equal number of cards should be removed from each house in the deck.

If I ever played this format (unlikely) the above would have to be a prerequisite for balance.
