[noob] What Purpose(s) do Lt & Hero/Monster Packs Serve?

By Farseerixirvost, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've played Imperial Assault and now looking to get into Descent. What is the purpose of Lieutenant packs and also the Monster & Hero packs? They don't strike me as similar to IA's campaign and blister/unit (where expansions can be used in head to head gameplay).

Also, are Lieutenants always enemy bad guys, or are some of them playable heroes?

I'm fairly new to the second edition, myself, but I think I can answer your questions.

If you don't have the first edition of this game, then Hero Packs are great, because you get more monsters and heroes to use in the second edition.

I think a couple of these hero packs, have actually got new monsters and heroes, that were not in the first edition.

Lieutenant packs are awesome, because you can replace the card board bosses with a figure and get cards for the overlord to use, however they are very expensive, but worth it to me, when you see the figures.

I hopes this helps you!

1. Hero & Monster Packs = more variety/tactical play/fun for both sides. You are basically buying more content.

2. Lieutenant Packs look like a cut content. So you basically pay twice for your overlord tools (Overlord deck + 10 Plot cards). I wish they put Belthir Lieutenant Pack into the Core box to promote the idea. Gameplaywise the mini is not that important. The 10 Plot cards is why you want to buy at least one Lieutenant Pack. As a newcomer you may want to buy Belthir Lieutenant Pack and/or Tristayne Olliven Lieutenant Pack. Also, there is an option to play Lieutenants as heroes.

Thanks to you both. Follow on question.

Is there a list of which Lieutenant(s) are cardboard in the core game that I can get replacement packs for? [I made the mistake with Imperial Assault of getting too much up front so want to take growing my Descent collection more deliberately - e.g., get core, play core; add X, play X; add Y, play Y...]

The Raythen and Serena Lieutenant packs come with both a lieutenant model and a hero model, along with hero cards. The Hero and Monster packs also come with new quests. Lastly, you can then unlock them in the Steam companion app for Descent.

Speaking of the Steam app...Technically nothing is stopping you from unlocking them in the Steam app right now, as no code is required, but you'd be flying blind when the game calls for those units without the physical content. Also, it simulates the overlord so you can play Descent solo if you choose to.

Edit: Just saw your response post after I posted.

There are 6 base game lieutenants:

Sir Alric Farrow

Belthir

Lady Eliza Farrow

Lord Merrick Farrow

Splig

Baron Zachareth

Added lieutenants for base game

You may want to review the top thread within the forum called Index of Useful Links , as it provides a large amount of information to the game.

One of the document links within there is a link under the section Community Tools & Game Aids called D2e Expansion Info . This is a spreadsheet which provides complete information on all of the expansions in the game.

One last comment ... all of the expansions that do come with Lieutenants have card board pieces that represent those lieutenants. The LT Packs replaces those card board pieces with minis, as well as provide additional content.

To add to the mention of Raythen and Serena, how *good* the two of them are is debatable (brown defense dice), but they are both unique- Raythen is the only non-warrior with 14 health, and Serena is the only hero period with 6 stamina. I've played both and I had a lot of fun.

Although the H&Ms have considerably more value if you want more heroes.

In my humble opinion, to play the 'bosses' as tokens, makes the game weird. It would be better have all the monstes and heroes in tokens then. Every time I bought an expansion I ordered the lt. packs along.

Same here. I've got anything that it is possible to have and some proxies to replace some familiars

I can't highlight enough (skarn fanboy lol) that the Skarn miniature is one of the best minis ever made for a game- especially if you like painting them epically- I always like to highlight Skarn's awesomeness to people asking about the minis- Skarn features in the Manor Of Ravens expansion which also has some othe rgood elements including a good tileset.

Sure thing :)

Yeah. I really wish I'd picked up the Skarn pack when it was 7 or 8 bucks on amazon.

What Proxys?? Show us!

Go to the Index of Useful Links thread , there's a whole section on proxy miniatures.

I've made a Reanimate using Hero Forge

and for the geomancer stones, I'm using this one : https://www.shapeways.com/product/PQPLHMR6X/summoned-stone-tokens-3-pcs?optionId=56341630&li=marketplace

this guy has done many tokens for the game too to replace the one on the box so they don't use anymore

Oh those are some nice resources.
