My First Tournament

By firebirddave, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I finally decided to try my skill/luck today at a store tourney. This was only my 3rd time playing 2.0 and my first time playing a tournament where people were out to win. Usually my friends and I would just take a single ship each and fly at each other in mass battles so not only did I have to come up with a list but I had to learn to move multiple ships. After much thought, I decided to go with a Rebel list. Ten Numb B-Wing with elusive, tractor beam and shield upgrade, Luke with Heightened Perception, R2-D2 and S-Foils and Wedge with Swarm Tactics, and R2 unit and S foils. I had previously learned that I do not do well remembering too many upgrades so I tried to keep it simple. The tractor beam should have been left off since I only ever even fired it once in 3 games.

Anyway, 8 people showed up and I was the only one playing Rebels. There were 2 Scum and the rest Empire. Game one I faced Vader in a Tie Advanced, Howl Runner and 3 academy pilots. Things started poorly for me as I bumped my own ships early on but after that they got worse as my opponent could not miss and I only managed to get half points for one of the Academy pilots while losing Wedge, Ten and half points from Luke. Darth was a beast but I failed to concentrate on any ties to take them out and I also rolled below average.

Into the loser bracket where I played a scum list consisting of 2 Star Vipers - Guri and another one, Dalan I think, a Jakku Gunrunner in a Quad Jumper (what ever they call them in 2.0) and L3-37 in an escape craft. I did a better job of coordinating my movement and took Guri out in one shot from Wedge which was a big help. My attempt to make Ten work failed as he went down shortly after Guri. I decided the Quad jumper was too annoying and tried taking it out but only managed to reduce it to half. Along the way though, I, almost by accident, took out the other Star Viper. I was close to losing Wedge when time was called. On the last move of the match, Wedge landed on an asteroid. A hit would kill him but, fortunately, I rolled a blank and so I won by 20 some points. My opponent had about as bad luck rolling as I did in game 1.

Game 3 was against another Empire list consisting of a tie Aggressor, an Alpha Class Star Wing and 3 Tie Advanced V1's. They were all loaded with concussion missiles and were low pilot skills. I don't remember if any of the pilots were unique. I managed to keep Ten facing the wrong way and wandering around the map but did also manage to do some fancy arc dodging with Luke and Wedge and concentrated them on the Aggressor taking it out early. The Alpha kept slamming but was never able to line up a good shot. The V1's fired some concussion missiles but my opponent was rolling the worst of anyone I have ever seen, usually only getting 1 hit after focusing and rerolls. Meanwhile, I was rolling evades out the wazoo. When I finally brought Ten into the fray, he was down to 1 v1 and the slamming Alpha. Ten got some good hits in and actually finished off one of them with Luke and Wedge taking out the other.

2 wins for a Rebel list and a top 4 finish (out of eight) seemed like a good result especially for a rookie. The winner was playing Empire with 3 Tie Interceptors and Whisper with Vader as a passenger. I think the runner up had a Scum list with Boba Fett but I never really got a good look at it.

Maybe I will tweak the list to add proton torp for Luke or Wedge and drop the tractor beam but Ten Numb and his ability to use stress tokens as focus tokens is just too much fun for me to drop him at this point.

Congrats on a fun day - for extra fun try Ten Numb with Squad Leader
