Our GM has no Hope!

Back in college (the first time, early 90s), I played in some club-run RPGs that had revolving GMs. They had this exact problem too. I despised them.

We did revolving with our old SR group. At peak we had around 6 switching GMs, but we used a Forum to exchange on the long term related stuff and when someone wanted to do more of those things he chose one or two GM(s) and engaged the big plot relevant tasks when one of those was running the job at hand.

It felt like a series without a main plot but worked quite ok for a long time.

@ the thing Disney did with the "GM who sold his books" i don't like what they did with 7 and 8 also. And 8 is the main reason i haven't watched Solo by now as i was somewhat angry when it came out (also some of the stuff that was thrown around social media from officials after 8 was part of that). But i plan to take a shot at it when i mostly forgot about 8 but just before 9 to give it a real chance :D

But i would never quit the whole thing, even if they manage to dig an even deeper hole with 9. It can never ruin 4,5 and 6 to a degreee that i would do more than pretend 7,8, and 9 never happened and treat everything else that comes as it was EU stuff where i pick what i like for my own game. At my table there is a reason we play between 4 and 5 ;)

At least 7,8 and maybe 9 do one thing for me: i like 1,2 and 3 more than before.

Personally my taste hasn't been soured, I find my outlook to be similar to Alex from the Star Wars Explained youtube series: If I don't particularly like an aspect of the canon, I just don't go back to it.

I'm not burned out on Star Wars but after 3 years of GMing, I am burned out on GMing and will be taking a few months off at the start of the new year. I just wanna spend some time and play some of the board games I don't get to play so often, take a break from having the responsibility of running games.

I'm finding this thread hilarious as normally the people who like the new stuff, TLJ in particular, are the ones who are usually being derided as easily triggered snowflakes.

I'm trying to sympathize with someone's love of old stuff being ruined by release of new stuff, but to me it only comes off as, well, entitled whining. Old stuff was fine before, but now new stuff is out old stuff must be thrown away? Methinks you invest more in your identity as a fan of a franchise than you care about the media itself in that case. Dislike the new stuff all you like, but if it ruins the old stuff for you, maybe you need to take a step back and consider what exactly it was you liked about all that stuff you've decided to throw away.

I mean, I can relate to the dissapointment, but not the reaction.

It's not like I burned my Judge Dredd comics after the Sylvester Stallone movie*. ;)

*for those who are lucky enough not to know, this movie is such a foul abomination that having Jar-jar in it would actually improve it.

I don't hate the new stuff. It's better than Episodes I&II. (Episode III wasn't that bad.)

And I really enjoyed Rebels, it felt a lot like a tabletop campaign.

But if you don't like the new stuff at all... Who cares? Do you still like the setting? Because that hasn't changed. None of the old stuff is gone. You don't have to include the new stuff, or acknowledge what happened. It's your game.

You're playing a game, not the films.

Huh. The prequels had the opposite effect on me. Made me all the more determined to create cool, interesting stories set in that time period (and others).

Never understood the prequel hate, it's the reason we're all here and we have everything that followed. Otherwise this board would be just a bunch of old dusty farts running boring games where every Jedi has to be like Luke, and every criminal ties back to Jabba.

But I don't care much about the movies anyway, the animated stuff is where it's all been since TCW first came out. You can tell a decent story and coherent story if you're not limited to 2 hours. I think Rebels, as a whole, tells the best story so far in the Star Wars universe, though the TCW mini-arcs are right up there. Even Resistance, which has the whiniest protagonist in SW history, has its merits with the backdrops and other visuals.

If Disney was wise, they'd finish E9 and never do another movie. High production TV proved itself as far back as Battlestar Galactica, and even more now with Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc. Hopefully this new Mandalorian series will be worth it, my hope is for darker and grittier. If not...well, like the OP's GM I might lose my taste for absorbing new Star Wars media too, but there are still innumerable stories I can happily set during the Clone Wars and before so I can't see tossing it all away.

We've tried reasoning with him - 'but the OT still exists in it's own little bubble' - type thing ... I think he'll end up being a bitter, twisted, grumpy old man when he retires 😂

I like the prequels as they came out around the same age for my sons as the OT for me... I 're-saw' the wonder of pew-pew-pew and woosh-shwing kinda stuff

oh well.... He has no interest in running an OT game, he really has hit rock bottom :(

I'm looking forward to the SJW Amanda Lorian, she'll be amazing (get it? I'll get my coat!)

I agree that high end TV is just putting out better stuff. The VFX are as good and they can/do tell better stories. I'm far more interested in The Expanse, GoT, Witcher, the LOTR series etc than I am in anything coming out in the theaters anymore.

I think it is quite interesting that a couple of people posted in this thread that they have walked away from the game, yet still post here daily, and often 😲

My love for Star Wars is deep. It would talk more than a couple of average films for me to walk away from the game.

I took a break for a few months. I returned after Solo.

I completely get where your gm is coming from. Before I saw TLJ I was brainstorming a SWRPG campaign, but after I saw the movie I lost interest immediately. I wouldn’t go so far as to get rid of my rpg books, novels, movies, or comics, but I don’t particularly feel like running a SW game or playing in one influenced by TLJ in the slightest. I’ve been cooking something up for Genesis based on another one of my favorite Sci-fi franchises though, and will probably pester my friends to play it until they give in, lol.

TLJ has pretty much killed my interest in most things Star Wars that are coming up. Still love the original trilogy, and greatly enjoy the majority of the prequels, but I couldn’t care less about episode 9.

Not that I don't see many of the flaws people point to in the Disney movies (except Rogue One, which I thought was nearly flawless). But seriously, anyone who would rather spend a couple hours with Hayden Christiansen or Jake Lloyd than with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega or Adam Driver has very different taste in movies from me.

Ewan McGregor, Ian McDiarmid Liam Neesen, Samuel L Jackson, Frank Oz, Christopher Lee, Terrance Stamp, Jimmy Smitts...

Looks like the prequels had far more talent on the whole actually. Harrison Ford saved TFA. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Adam Driver aren’t exactly what I’d consider good actors. Hayden Christiansen would fit right in with them.

I’d have added Natalie Portman to the list, but to be honest, her acting skills weren’t really on display during those films.

I think what you said about Portman also goes for all the rest of the actors you mentioned except McGregor.

I personally need ongoing content that appeals to me in order to keep my creative interest focused on a particular setting. I don't feel abandoning a genre because there was a stinker or two in your eyes is warranted, but I can definitely sympathize with it sucking the air out of a GM's creativity/motivation balloon.

Like I said, Star Trek Genesys now, WHFRP next, then I'm thinking Android/The Expanse following. Then again, hope springs eternal, maybe The Mandalorian and Cassian Andor Murder Show, will reignite my interests. I've got a good idea for a Star Wars campaign session 1 kick off, just nothing after that...

True...I stopped playing the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game after the Hobbit movies came out, they sucked so hard they sucked all my joy away. I've only recently picked it up again (but only using stuff from LotR).

Which is, of course, an opinion. Stallone at least had better shoulder pads than Urban... 😉

They should have gone h*** for leather and done a dark judges movie

Dependes upon your criteria. Stalon's may have been more "comic accurate", but Urban's were far more practical and realistic . I give the advantage to Urban.

Well, that seems a bit drastic. A bit like burning nike shoes in response to POLITICAL TRAUMA X. The company doesn't care, they have your money. The relationship is over, as far as they're concerned.

Also, Disney will be making these movies until the sun grows cold. Some will be good, some will be terrible, some will be awesome, some will be dog poop with nuggets of corn embedded in it. Watch what you like, skip what you don't. Seems simple to me.

You got a link to that Star Trek Genesys you mentioned, or are you guys just winging it?

The Stallone one was just a standard 90’s action flick with extra cheese. Entertaining in it’s own way for sure, but the Urban one is great. Wish they’d make another one.

Lol, fair enough. Love to see it. I’m currently cooking up something I’m calling Stargate Genesys. It’s fairly far along atm. I’ll definitely share once I’m done. The artwork is what’s been keeping me the most busy though.

Changed my username because Ghatt was the name of a Star Wars character I created, but since I’m going to start posting more varied material than just Star Wars, I figured I’d change it. It’s also a bit more catchy.

I just grouped a buncha Talents in basic headings, like Tech, Vehicle, Combat, etc. Made some 'careers' with skills that used one of the groups as a 'focus' they could buy Talents from in the Genesys trees. They could buy from any focus just cost more like non career skills. Mostly it was just a lot of typing making decent lists for them.

Made a chart or two with some basic gear. I made a phaser Stun shot work like a Bola and called it done.

I did some competitive roll options for ship combat, but honestly it's a espionage/mystery kinda campaign and ship combat just isn't likely to happen, so that was work for more or less nothing.
