you only discard the assets that tell you to discard them. however, if you need to make a slot(hands, accessory, arcane, body) free and the asset is not a weakness card, you can discard it when playing a card that would conflict with that slot.
Yup. Take 2 examples from the core set:
The first discards after using its final supply, while the latter does not. There are cards, such as Venturer, that add supplies, charges, secrets, etc. to cards, so with those that would be discarded, it is wise to add to them first.
I have found that cards which take no slot (like First Aid) are more likely to have an automatic discard effect. They don't all, though, Strange Solution & Thermos for example.
Also, even if there's no prospect of re-charging your burned-out flashlight, it's good to be able keep it around if you don't need the slot for anything else. An effect might make you discard an asset, and if you can sacrifice a use-less one (note the pun), so much the better.
