Long Term Play

By Myrrik, in Genesys

Hi Folks

Just a quick question for those of you who have been running a Campaign - How are you finding Genesys for Long term play?

Do you feel there are any pitfalls to Characters developing into higher XP numbers? Do thinks become stale or can Genesys sustain a long term campaign

I can only speak for Star Wars but I have run a campaign where all the players had over 1000XP. There were SOME challenges but really, the only big problems are with Jedi.

GeneSys is more flexible with its use of talents (you can virtually choose any) so there my be issues later on down the track with that much XP.

Im close to 10 sessions in sticking with 5xp pr jour and we play 4 hours a session so right now player are 200 xp over the start. So far No issues i can run All npc straight out of the book and still challenge them.

Compared to star wars the pc are a lot more broader not as hyper specialized as in SW.

I asked the players last session how they felt progres and All where happy about charecter options and development.

200 xp is by No mean high but I dont Think this system will break even with 600 or a 1000 just keep checking with the players that All are having fun

My group has been playing for about 15 sessions with an average of 20 XP per session and each session lasting 4 hours (although the last few have gone over that by 1-2 hours). They also earned some bonus XP for a massive stunt they coordinated.

At just over 300 XP earned since character creation the players have been able to really develop their characters. Their Heroic Abilities are getting very potent, and they've been able to get better at their focus and branch out.

I've currently had no trouble creating interesting and difficult encounters. But the last session took place in an underground library that spanned dozens of miles. So that proved to be more difficult for the viking than it did the scholar.

You may find that as they grow, they start putting points into more situational talents. It seems incumbent on the GM to pay attention to what they're buying along those lines and give them a chance to use the talents here and there and they'll continue to feel like taking a risk on a more esoteric talent will eventually pay off.

My group will be starting around year's end. I'm really excited to see how their characters grow.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Good to know that there don't seem to be any issues with long term games (As that is our preferred play-style)

My group is around 400xp each on average (5-6 characters depending who all shows up). I have been able to challenge them consistently. Variety of challenge is important, because it keeps everyone on their toes, gives everyone a chance to shine, and gives them good reason to take or improve skills they might otherwise ignore (Resilience, Discipline, and Coordination checks in particular).
