Mud/Basing effect?

By VAYASAN, in Painting

What do people use now for basing mud effects?(for the base before grass etc)

I used to use Basetex (uk based small company) who sold a great tub of 'mud'

I dont have time to mix my own so need something I can buy online, used to base the models base before applying grass etc.

Thanks

Vallejo "brown earth" basing paste.

Watch Sorastro's videos to see it applied and what the result can be.

Or you can use "dark earth" for darker mud without washing.

Depending on the type of mud you want, Citadel offers two that look great when finished. For a more traditional, dirty looking mud like Mimban from Solo, use "Stirland Mud" but apply it generously to the base and let it dry completely. When dry, you can drybrush for detail or repaint it any color you like. The Sirland Mud can even be applied to the minatures for a more detailed effect.

For a cracked dried up waterbed, desert "mud" look you could use Agrellan Earth. First paint your base with a contrasting undercoat and once again apply the Agrellan Earth generously. When dried completely it really gives that cracked earth look. You can detail it as you wish with both paint or washes.

Both finishes create outstanding effects.

On these two Mimban officers I used Stirland Battlemire from Citadel as the textured base layer.
Washed it with a darker wash (Nuln Oil), then drybrushed with a slightly lighter brown shade.
Then to give the wet muddy look i layered a gloss coat over the top (Ardcoat).
