Clarification on tractor beams and effects

By player3506368, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For example, a quadjumper , at range 1 , with a large base ship in its bullseye, gives the large base ship 2 tractor beam tokens. Another quadjumper, with the large base ship in its arc, gives it a further token. It now has 3 tokens. As I understand it, it can now be boosted forward, or barrel rolled, if those moves are legal, to any appropriate position the player who hands out the tokens desires.

If however, the large base ship receives 2 tractor beam tokens in the activation phase, and another quadjumper, Unkar Plutt, ends the activation phase in contact with that large base ship, at the start of the engagement phase, Unkar will give a tractor beam token to the large base ship, and receive one himself.

Does the large base ship get 'moved' by the last token, which now makes the third token in total, allowing a move.

Or, is it only the initial tokens that can effect the barrel roll or boost, which in this instance, are insufficient to move the large base ship.

Asking for a friend ?

Not quite sure I 100% get your question but as soon as the large based ship gets 3 tokens the player who gave the token to tractor it gets to boost or barrel roll it. So for example if Unkar Plutt rolls up and give the Falcon, for example 2 tokens with his action. Then the Falcon moves and bumps Plutt, at the start of the Engagement Phase Plutt will give it a third token and then gets to boost or barrel roll the Falcon if he wants to.

In a slightly stranger example say you could attack your own ships with R5-TK and you had a tractor beam. Someone could come along and give your YV-666 2 tractor tokens, then you shoot your own YV-666 with your tractor beam, then you get to control the boost or barrel roll as it was you that gave it the tokens that made it tractored.

In a nut shell, a ship does not suffer any effects from a tractor token UNTIL it gets the appropriate amount of tokens. So..

Yes, the ship may get moved and rolls one less. Tokens do not get removed until the end of the round, so you have until then to get 3 tokens on that large base ship. It does not matter how or when a ship gets the tokens, only if they get the the right amount of tokens. Anything you add after that is moot.

can be worth noting that one token is enough to make the ship in question roll one less green dice when defending, regardless of the ships size. it's only ever one dice less, though, even if the ships has several tokens.

Cheers guys.

I was using unkar at the weekend, and was ruled that after an tractor array action , dealing 1 token to a medium based ship, unkar ended in contact with the medium ship at the start of engagement phase. I handed out a token to unkar and the medium base ship, and then attempted to barrel roll the medium ship, which was ruled that I couldn't, as that was only possible at the time when the first token was dealt out.

I thought that was the case.

Anyway...bridge, water, under.

@meffo thanks for mentioning that! I just pulled up my rules reference to check you on that because we have been playing that a ship needs to be "tractored" to lose the green die...

What an utterly bizarre way to think tractors worked. I get why I didn't really understand your question initially as it would never of occurred to me that someone might think you get 1 and only 1 opportunity to tractor a ship.
