New to Legion

By badgerclaw171, in Star Wars: Legion

So play X wing for a long time and I've also played Armada. I Used to play a lot of Miniature games like 40K Before. And before I place a lot of money into a new Game is this worth getting into. I am just a little concerned on its popularity I don't see many people playing it And I was wondering about the rules Are they sound. I know I can download and have The rules for the game but reading and seeing and working and want to different things. So I was wondering what your thoughts were. What's cool about it what needs work are the units that are just totally worthless although units that you must have. Or any Other thoughts you might have on the game.

Preciate the input thank you.

If your local game store has anyone playing you should see if you can borrow some minis to have them teach you. Just be ready to get hooked. Personally I think it brings together the best parts of X-wing and Armada with the bonus of feeling more like a hobby (painting, terrain building, etc.) than just another game and money sink.

Aside from the t47 for the rebels, everything is situationally good.

The AT-ST struggles some too, but can work if your opponent wasn’t expecting it AND you play it right to maximize the point value you put into it.

I can’t think of any other “must avoids”. The rest is based on your style I suppose.

To put it in X-Wing terms, there isn’t a unit like the 1.0 JumpMaster that is so far above any other. There are units that are more competitive (if you compete), but every unit is playable, with perhaps the only exception being the T-47 Airspeeder (it just sucks, but looks good on paper, who knew?).

As far as community goes, there are pockets where Legion is strong, but Legion isn’t as prevalent or ubiquitous as X-Wing. If there is no activity in your area, you will probably have to build a community yourself. You will have help in that area with “Operations” written and provided free by Fantasy Flight. Each Operation can be found where the rules are downloaded (I think there are three so far), and can be played as a tournament, league, or just for fun. If you have support from your LGS, you can also get kits for rewards for the Operations.

The rules are very good, taking the best of X-Wing and Armada, as stated above. Unlike X-Wing, Legion doesn’t have an FAQ. Any corrections to the rules are made directly to the rules in an update along with clarifications. Each Keyword is explained and defined, and any issues or abuses players find in the rules, are clarified and updated directly to the rules. So far, this method seems to work well, instead of having multiple documents, “there can be only one”, though I’m not sure X-Wing has an FAQ any more (haven’t played since 1.0).

Bottom line, Legion is fun, fair, equal and addictive, but if there is no community in you area, you will probably have to build it yourself.

I love the game and can’t get enough, literally can’t get enough... {leaves to go play Legion} ????

On rules, remember that Legion is built on years of experience from other ffg games so the rules are pretty well done

The rules are sound. I’ve only recently gotten started with Legion, myself, but I’m loving it already. The only downside is the investment needed to make strong armies. That can be mitigated if there’s a local community so you can focus on one faction, but I don’t have that luxury.

After $70 on the core set (I bought it at 20% off), each faction soaked up another $90, roughly, and they’re still not quite the armies I want. That added more corps troopers, heavies, support and additional commander options.

Next step is scouts and commandos, and I imagine I’ll still be short a few corps units to make armies I’m truly happy with.

If you're worried about its popularity, like others have said- I would advise going to your local hobby game stores to see if there are any communities around it. Also check Facebook for groups and events in your area, thats a great way to not only see if there are people playing around you, and if so, Im sure someone would happily show you how to play!

If not, then talk to the owner/manager of a store that sells Legion and maybe try helping them setup some events or maybe even help run demos during the days/times they are busy to get people buying and playing the game!

The rules are great, very fair, balanced and easy to follow and pick up on. From my experience, once you understand the basics of how it works, adding in the more "advanced" rules isnt too challenging and can be pretty intuitive.

I think the best part is that unlike X-Wing (1.0 at least), you dont have to buy all the expansions to collect all the upgrades, you can pick the faction that's your favorite and have access to all the same upgrades as the other. Now you will probably need to pick up most of your chosen faction's expansions to get the full range of upgrades, but the nice part about that is you can always use them in your army :)

Dont forget! If Rebels and Imperials aren't your flavor, the Republic and Separatists will also be upcoming factions in the next year or so, so there will definitely be more options available!
