Starter Set 2.0: Did we really need a new set of templates?

By Greedo_Sharpshooter, in X-Wing

Did 2.0 really need a new set of movement templates?

What do we get in the 2.0 starter set other than a new damage deck to justify its importance?

Did we need new flippable shield tokens? If u have previously bought multiple starter sets from 2.0 you are likely getting 3 extra ships you did not need.

tbh this stuff could have been included in the conversion kits and the new damage deck could have been sold separately.

Yes.

It's a starter set, designed for people just starting out. 2.0 newcomers need to buy it as well, but that doesn't change the fact it needs to include everything a brand new beginner requires to play too!

How would I play the game if I didn't have movement templates?

yeah its stupid that they didnt have a starter set and then throw the damage deck in the conversion kits

I like the markings on the base and the rules for barrel/talon roll.

You can modify your 1st edition ones. I did, since I like the style more - the new ones are too clean. Took me 15 minutes to add small triangles indicating where the middle is.

Noone I played against has complained, neither causal nor tourney.

If you have some favorite acrylics, bunch my locals had theirs reworked to include the lines.

I'd be down for that, the large deck with fang fighter schematics instead of the X-Wing... Think I'd bought that

Yes, it could have been done in conversion kits. They chose not to do that.

If you ever fly rebels, you’ll want it for xwing pilots and Force talents for Luke (who’s also only available in core set). Unlike 1.0, he’s really good now. (Those Force powers also really help Vader if Imperial is more your thing).

If you skip it, you could work to convert your templates and eBay a damage deck I imagine.

You don’t need 2.0 shields - you just need to mark your old ones to indicate active vs inactive.

Exactly my toughts!!! In their game Runewars they even offer an Essentiels Pack. So that you dont need to buy the Starter Game if you dont like the warbands in there! Runewars Essentials

Why was this not possible for X-Wing? I would have gladly skimmed over the Starter Pack then. I don´t want stuff for free. I just want a reasonable distribution method. Now I have another 2 Tie-Fighter and 1 X-Wing and countless tokens I never use. All because I needed that starter for a stupid damage deck AGAIN. Templates I have (like 90% of the players I know) acryl ones - and i bought a new set for 2nd edition anyway. They just should start selling damage decks seperatly. Long overdue!

This. The core set is for all players, not just existing ones. New players need a way to get into the game. This really isn't difficult stuff, no matter how many confused emojis Rexler Brath posts.

Yes having to buy the core set was disappointing.

For the first time in my many years of playing this game I have more ships of a certain type (xwing) than I can field in list. And it wasn't because of buying multiples of any releases.

I have 5 xwings because of two different starter kits, the individual kit, a saws kit, and a rebel transport kit.

I have a terrifying suspicion. *looking around if someone is spying on me*

FFG is a corporation that wants to sell stuff in order to make money...!

*whispers*

And that's perfectly fine...

This situation is good for new players but bad for existing players.

I counter your argument with...

How are existing players encouraged to keep playing if the have to buy extra stuff they don't actually need?

The issue I have if you already have 1.0 movement templates is that you are forced into buying ones. By putting new content in the starter set such as Luke (is he only available in the starter?) and new damage deck you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. I get that new players need templates. But selling the damage deck separately would have avoided significant double up and let what you buy what you NEED instead of but extras you DO NOT need.

hey FFG, themed damage decks (card art for each faction) would have been a cool idea. Having extra damage decks isnt a bad thing and experienced players with large collections could have used them to train up new players. These might have been included in all of the conversion kits and/or sold separately.

Go to a System Open then, you can get a themed one there.

The templates are the exact same as before and even though the cardstock they are made of is fairly durable, they still take damage and wear and tear so spares are always a plus. The tokens are also nice and any experienced gamer will tell you that no matter what game it is, you cant have too many of them as they get lost and if you travel to play, it is always nice to have a set of tokens, dice, templates or whatnot separate in your travel case so you dont have to worry about transferring or forgetting something. Iwill often buy spares of starter sets for games for these very reasons. The price alone is justifyable for the models by themselves and the rest are free so why complain?

Besides, as has already been pointed out, it is a starter set. Not everyone who buys it will have played 1st edition. I know myself and my group is just now getting into it and i literally bought my first starter set a week before 2nd edition was released.

still not convinced they needed to change the movement templates. to me this smells like... lets make the established 1.0 players buy this stuff too.

Ya know, there are folks who buy starter sets and break them down to sell on ebay piecemeal. Youcould always go there to get what you need. I bought like 4 extra rulebooks that way. That way you dont have to "pay" for the free stuff that comes with the game.

The dice and templates I feel only a fool would complain about getting for free but then I'm looking at the glass half full...

The only complaint I would have is A new player coming in is buying a ship (or two if they want to play rebels) that they dont need unless they are splitting the cost with another player or intend to play both factions. You had this same issue with GW games that I spent over 30 years playing.

I like what they did with Dust (also a great game btw) and sold the starter sets faction specific where every model you got could be put straight to use as a force and the extra free stuff like dice and templates could be used or stored for spares or put into the travel kits. Something like that might do well here and the two new upcoming factions look like they would be good tests for that idea....

They can't please everyone... but if they included "EVERYTHING THEY SHOULD HAVE" in the conversion kits, they'd cost $80 each.

I feel like people are forgetting the important little line down the middle that I wouldn't trust if I saw drawn on to the template...

With how some of the templates turned out, trusting the "official" ones is iffy too.

where I live, the cheapest conversion kits are going for $79. Lando Falcon $65. 2nd edition small ship expansions $31 ea. 2nd ed Core set $63.

These are actually good prices for NZ. shade over $300 to convert each faction with a core set.how does that compare with prices are ur LGS?

Canadian, US, AU, or NZ dollars. I'm thinking there is some confusion due to the exchange rate equivalencies. 80$ US = roughly $119 NZD for example. $31 NZD = about $21 US as another.

With 7 factions in the game, not creating an essentials pack does feel rather dumb, frankly. It would probably still have had the new templates and some common upgrades, but it didn't need the ships in it.

agree. would have been cool to let the purchaser pick any 3 small ships! would hav avoided the situation if buying 3 ships u dont want or need.

I'm a little confused. I was talking about something like this. The customizable starter bundle it sounds like you're suggesting would have been a logistical nightmare.
