Are veteran card packs still a thing?

By Wazat, in X-Wing

I remember unofficial promises of Veteran Card Packs mollifying a lot of concerns about the old days of buying expansions and duplicate models just for the cards. I haven't been keeping up... has anything come of this? Is FFG talking about it, or has it just fallen off the radar?

I really like the idea of not paying for more duplicate ships (e.g. ARC-170) for cards to play in tournaments, especially since I already have all the models I need for most ships. I liked that 2nd edition was going to be different. Clone Wars would be a fantastic time to deploy the packs, since these are the first non-conversion-kit expansions (other than Lando's Falcon) and the ARC and Z-95 are both crossing into those factions.

It would be a sad day when we find out it was all just rumors.

The z95 isn’t crossing factions. It’s a scum ship expansion. And they already said all it’s comtents (sans the model) could be found on the conversion box.

Now, I would really like to see how they address the other neutral upgrades being dropped in the wave....

Those upgrades will probably be added to the other factions' ships in wave 4.

I think Wazat is referencing the Clone Z-95, which honestly is a bit of a different ship than the Z-95-AF that the Rebels and Scum have.

But no word on veteran card packs? :(

Not that I've seen.

The Z-95 isn't crossing factions this wave, it would be nice if they gave an option to get the cards in it though for people who want to convert more models without needing to either buy the new expansion or buying a second/third conversion kit.

The ARC-170 I think doesn't entirely fit the rerelease model here since it is more or less being treated as a new ship for the Republic rather than rerelease. Hopefully when the Rebel version is rereleased it will allow people to pick it up without buying that expansion for the cards there.

If that’s the case, it hasn’t come up yet. I’d worry about that one when it’s here.

(is that canon anywhere? I don’t recall seeing them in the series).

I never imagined they might release a Cards-only pack for a ship being released in an entirely new faction and thus containing entirely new cards.

Ships that they released in a conversion kit, and then add pilots to? Sure, that makes plenty of sense to me.

The Clone Z-95 was a run of modified Z-95s produced for the Republic during the Clone Wars, they were more heavily armored, as wide as ARC-170s, and had torp slots instead of missile tubes. They showed up in the Clone Wars show and are the mainline fighter of the Republic. So, very much its own ship.

All the same, we've got new cards coming out in all these expansions that would work on other ships. Same deal with Lando's Falcon.

The idea was that you wouldn't be buying ships just for their cards (or extra copies of the cards) in second edition, but that's turning out to have been a pipe dream.

they straight up lied about a number of things, I dont have high hopes about them fulfilling any promises now they have hundreds of thousands of dollars from conversion kits

I really hope it wasn't all lies. They specifically said in the preview streams that there would be verteran card packs. There is also a new obstacle type in the new wave 3 boxes... what about them? ?

At least as far as card availability goes, I think this is more a case of people getting misinformation from the grapevine. "Veteran Card Packs" were promised for rereleases with new pilots, but the two rereleased expansions have no new content (I'm calling the ARC-170 a new expansion much like Sabine's Tie Fighter or Most Wanted), so they aren't needed yet. Similarly, they actually did acknowledge they wouldn't get every new upgrade card in an expansion for each faction right away, but they said they were going to try and keep the droughts a lot smaller (e.g. In SW:Legion's second wave, Imperial players got access to a new Training Upgrade, Hunter, while Rebel players got access to a new command card, Improvised orders. With Wave 3 coming up, Palpatine will come with Improvised orders, while the Wookiee Warriors and Chewbacca will come with Hunter).*

Now, a lot of this grew in the telling as fans talked about it over the months, but that's not FFG's fault. Nothing wrong with being upset, of course, but those specific statements weren't lies by any means.

Also, it might not be lies but breaking of promises because reasons. That's a bit of a difference.

Oh man, if Palp really has improvised orders I’m going to be so happy. That’s one thing I really want for Veers and just assumed I’d never get.

Oops, wrong forum.... sorry.

Honestly, I think card packs as a whole was a concept invented by the community. The exact promise I recall from the ffg preview was you’d never need to buy out of faction or buy a model you already had “for the cards”. They never actually said HOW they’d accomplish this.

The z95 and striker concern me a little that the “how” is “rerelease = conversion kit contents”. While this ensures we only buy what we really want and we never have to buy more ships for cards, it also cuts the development legs of the original factions off and let’s complexity/scope creep into all the new ones so they have the coolest toys and new designs.

Maybe that was the plan all along? You CAN stay in faction, but you’ll be bored and really really want another new one in order to keep up?

Not sure - my plan is to hold the line at the original 3 + First Order since I have the models already. Once I convert those, I can wait and see what new stuff comes or doesn’t and make a better choice then.

I have yet to see anything more than “Alex said this” or “He said that she said...”

But even then, I only ever got the idea that rereleases of 1e ships in 2.0 within the same faction might get card packs. Did any of you seriously think FFG was just going to stop trying to sell you model spaceships...?

They never said such a thing. Stop conflating your wishes with what FFG have said.

What has FFG actually said? Was it just " Veteran players will not need to buy ship models they already own to get the upgrades." , or did they explicitly mention single-ship upgrade packs at some point?

The most direct quotations mentioned any new content in rereleases would be available to players in some way besides buying a whole new ship, but what that would look like was just speculation based on the little baggies in the conversion kits.

I don’t remember seeing anything about card packs from ffg. The closest we’ve seen to that is the conversion kits.

they also said they would never sell an expansion without models, yet conversion kits exist.

they said no card available to a faction in 2.0 would only come with another factions expansion, yet barrage rockets etc. Im willing to bet within the year there are a dozen plus out of faction upgrades

they said that conversion kits would have all the components needed to play everything the kit converts simultaneously, yet medium bases and turret arc indicators were skimped on so you cant. plus a number of the conversion pilot chits have both sides printed in such a way that you cant play with your choice of the ships because unique pilots are opposite sides and there arent enough chits for generics. this means that for many lists you need 2 conversions to use the advertised contents of 1 kit

theres a bunch of other stuff too over the years, but i think those 3 examples show how free they feel to make statements they dont intend to honor

Wow, I'm being told off for this. @HolySorcerer & co, I'm trying to not make this about "my wishes". A lot of us were told about these in the Share Your Questions thread and other locations. It was a big selling point, an indication that FFG had turned a new leaf on how they would market their products to veteran players (many of whom had started leaving the game because of card-chasing). If it turns out to have been a community rumor and I've been tricked, okay, but please don't treat me like I'm just emotionally dredging up lies here. As @Squark and @ScummyRebel pointed out, it's likely an idea that grew wild in retellings by the time it reached me.

I've messaged customer support and also asked in the Share Your Questions thread (assuming it's even watched anymore). It's not likely I'll get an answer, but it's an effort nonetheless.

I didn't realize a silly meme and a some questions would get me told off but... oh right, these are the FFG Forums.
