New obstacles in Wave III: Ion Clouds?

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

If you look at the article, you can see what appear to be a total of six pink obstacle tokens.

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2018/11/9/enter-the-clone-wars/

Given that they appear to be swirls of energy, I'm hoping that these are going to be Ion alternatives to the debris tokens. Assuming that's the case, how do you think they'll be implemented? I see a few possibilities here.

1) Add an Ion token. Obvious.

2) Take a point of shield damage. Maybe roll a die for it, but it shouldn't do hull damage.

I'm almost positive on those two, but what else could they do? I'm thinking maybe something to hinder projectile weapons. Either restrict the ability to acquire target locks if the line of fire passes through the cloud, or that you cannot fire missiles and torpedoes through the cloud. If it's an Ion cloud, it makes sense that it would mess up the tracking of projectiles.

Anyone have any other thoughts or ideas?

The possibilities you listed seem logical.

There's a new square red token visible in some of the pictures that may have something to do with it.

Edit: that new token looks like it could be a "-1 Agility" thing.

The square tokens is ion damage since it is a persistent token, especially for medium and large based ships.

I'm talking about the new square tokens.

Okay now I see. I don't think they have anything to do with the obstacle since the new obstacle is not in this spread.

If I was going to take a guess, Buzzdroid.

It's in all of the prequel spreads except the standalone Delta and Vulture

There's a token for the buzz droids in one of the spreads. I imagine it will just have a rules insert like other similar items.

I think the red stuff could be related to the new red icon but it might also be something entirely new. Malfunction, maybe?

It hardly makes sense but it would be amusing if it was somehow something like tibanna gas. Roll when you move through it to suffer crit damage on a crit, and when you attack someone on a gas cloud, add a crit result.

Then eventually someone has an upgrade for scooping it to clear stress or something.

Interesting ideas. Have to bear in mind balance though - for ex. if it only damages shields not hull, every TIE swarm player will exclusively bring these to matches ;)

Unless they're Mining Guild TIE swarms.

or First Order TIEs

They have the Agility symbol in the middle. Maybe a debuff from either passing through the new clouds or from a force ability?

As I remember, ion clouds used to wreck havok with electronic systems. So here are a couple of ideas that might be taken seperately or together.:

- Deactivates shields: take direct hull damage while overlapping the cloud.

- If you overlap a cloud, it breaks target locks: both those you have and those that the enemy have on you.

- Prevents a ship from being activated during the sytems phase

- Etc

I see a thick straight arrow crossed twice, not a squiggly evade arrow, and tractor beam tokens already reduce Agility.

Maybe it increases the difficulty of maneuvers? Reduces speed?

I wonder if it's something like this: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kaliida_Nebula/Legends

And the red tokens might be sensor malfunctions that result from it. What do sensor malfunctions do? Uh... maybe focus only turns one eye instead of all while you have a malfunction? No, that's meh. I don't know.

I'm leaning towards this too. The icon resembles a drill bit. Maybe if you stack too many of these tokens, hits that land on your ship are auto-crits.

By all means, please deliberately give ion tokens to your swarm of arc-locked small-based ships.

Begun, you being ionized has.

Anyone know what this could be?

By the way, check out that dial!

Only E-wings are that maneuverable.

Look at a pilot card. The Agility stat is indicated by a Thick Green Arrow with thin black lines crossing it. The new square token has the same exact symbol but in red. Evade is the curvy road symbol. So the new token is likely a - modifier to the number of green dice rolled without the affected ship being able to be moved in the way tractors tokens allow and that sticks around round to round until a specific condition is met.

It is upside down in the spread but this looks to be it: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/DRK-1_Dark_Eye_probe_droid

Exactly what I was thinking. It has template guides on all sides so I'm wondering if it actually gets to move around the battlefield.

To what end?

Probably does. I'm thinking kind of a remote controlled version of Informant revealing the dial(s) of the ship(s) it is overlapped by. Maybe can only move with the 1 straight ruler, hopefully can be shot.
