T-47 - My first attempt at painting in a LONG time

By Digitalfiends, in Painting

I haven't painted a miniature in about 34 years - my first miniatures being a bunch of poorly painted Blood Angels when I was 9. Over the past year or so I've sort of gone nuts getting back into the hobby buying paints, miniatures, etc. Now that my daughter is almost the same age as when I first started, I figured it was fitting for us to finally try and paint one of the many Legion miniatures sitting in my display case. I still haven't played a game yet, but have watched a lot of battle reports... ?

I decided to start with the T-47 since it gets no love really in this game (based on all the battle reports I've watched). So, I figured, if I screw up the paint job I can just hide the miniature somewhere and claim that I'm not playing it because of the current meta. ?

Anyhow, since I really have no experience with painting, I decided to follow Sorastro's T-47 painting guide on YT. My daughter helped do the first two layers and I finished the details off as she was finding it a bit difficult. I still need to base the thing, but I think it turned out OK. Sorasto makes this stuff look ridiculously easy. Also, I've quickly realised that it's going to take a really long time to do 4 squads of storm troopers, 4 rebels, one commando, one scout, 2 AT-RTs, 2 speeder bikes, an AT-ST, an E-web, and a 1.4 FD. I'm looking forward to it but...wow. lol

(still needs to be based properly)

(you can see in that last shot I could have worked the Nuln oil a bit better, among other issues!)

Things I learned as a newb:

- thin your paints more! Especially when mixing Citadel base paints with Vallejo...ugh. I forgot those were thicker than the Vallejo stuff I was also using.

- don't over do the Nuln oil. I got that stuff in places that I didn't really want it.

- wet blending is harder than it looks for some reason.

- some Citadel brushes really suck others are not bad at all. The Kolinsky sable brushes I had are nice though.

- painting with your 8 year old daughter is awesome.

Spelling fix

Congrats on making the memory. 20+ years later a friend and I still have and talk about models his little sister, brother, and parents helped him paint.

This looks great. For such a long hiatus (I had a 25 year break before getting back into the hobby) your T-47 looks top notch. It is so nice that you have shared this hobby with your daughter. I love doing things with the kids and have introduced them to Imperial Assault and Legion.

Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more posts.

Thanks! We're going to try basing it tonight, which my daughter should be able to do a lot of.

that is a crisp looking paint job!

Looking great!

Can't wait until my boys can join me in the hobby - oldest is almost 3, and he already loves to paint plaster cast "miniatures" "like daddy".
