2.0 Uglies

By Ikka, in X-Wing

So I've made a few Uglies for X-wing (X-TIEs and Chir'daki) and have a couple of Y-wings coming this week to make some Y-TIEs and TYE-wings, so I made some rules for them. I view these as playing in very casual/fun games and possibly campaign games like HoAC. Any thoughts?

I've actually always REALLY disliked the mixed ship Star wars "uglies".

But....

A well-done model and your stats would be fun to use in one of my Edge of the Empire StarWars RPG campaigns for some pirates. ;)

Thanks dude!

Alien Luxury Miniatures has some if you're into buying via Shapeways:

No Y-TIE,TIE Wing or X-TIE sadly. Some of the newer ones and the Chir'Daki though.

Thank you! I personally disliked Uglies for a long time, but re-read the X-wing series again and wondered what it would be like to strap yourself into a ramshackle hunk-of-junk and attack the enemy. So I cut up a couple of extra X-wings and TIEs and made some Uglies for fun. Now I like them, it is fun to be in the underdog position once in a while, and painting the Uglies is so similar to my Scrapyard Scum that it makes it fairly easy (rust and corrosion is always cool).

How the Y-TIE moved (panels replaced the Y-Wings engines, TIE/Ln engines are in the back of the TIE cockpit) and the TYE-Wing was supposed to be slow (Had both of the Y-Wing's engines and both of the TIE/Ln's engines) is beyond me. Looking at them the Y-TIE is a fugly drifting coffin and the DIE-Wing would be a friggin interceptor...

I believe the Y-TIE, much like the X-TIE, had TIE engines placed on the back of the Y-wing fuselage, while the TIE panels recharged the four laser cannons (making it slightly faster than the Y-wing due to the TIE engines, with more firepower than a TIE fighter). The TYE-wing generally didn't have the TIE engines though, just the Y-wing ones, so it was as slow as a Y-wing with the firepower of a TIE.

Of course, all of these ships are ridiculous, but entertaining anyway. And now the new canon has some sort of AT-ST/TIE Ugly, seen in the Poe comic.

There is an AT-AT cockpit being converted into a ship in the comic the Canon uglies are from... :)

Jawas junkyard: We try it, you fly it!

I love uglies. I always thought they should be statted in such a way that a swarm of ten would be viable.

Would need to be 8 now. Tourney is hard locked to a 2-8 ship count per squadron. :)

What is locked can be unlocked. Wouldn't want uglies to be the same as TIEs or Z-95s now, would we?

Why not? :)

Ha! Because they are the snub fighter equivalent of demolition derby cars. I wasn't a fan, but I could see a gritty tv series or a fast paced single box spin off game.

Think it over. If you can't afford a worn Z-95 or T-16 then how could you safely maintain a raft of battle debris cobbled together with Gamorrean boot laces. Who would fly that? Two thirds of the dirt track pod racers are probably better built.

The pilots would be so crazy even the major crime syndicates wouldn't send them up. Spiced out, adrenaline junkie hotheads with less of an attention span than a porg who never out grew holo-vid fantasies the lot of them. Probably led by a washed out deserter who uses them to keep drink-fueled delusions of grandeur alive.

It could make a fun spin off game though. Set asteroids and debris in a circle or spiral and chase each other in circles. Have a wacky damage deck that has hallucinations and blind rage effects or sends you barrel rolling across the board till you can roll a hit for your astromech to fix it. Throw in drunk jawa mechanics and addled droids that flip their card every turn for more zany fun. End up a 5 second crater or become a wild space legend...

I think you're grossly under estimating their potential, but your welcome to that.

I don't feel strongly either way. That extra cup of coffee kicked my imagination into hyper drive. If the Falcon was space worthy after crash landing on Savareen, all the uglies will fly fine. The versions the OP created could spice up HotAC games or work well in a Kessel campaign.

You're demolition derby concept is a sweet idea though. Less cutesy Mario Cart and more grit. :)

Well, they could work if you you consider the ones potentially represented in game would to be more akin to hotrods than demolition derby fodder.

Thematically, they could also work nicely having utter crap base stats, but several viable configurations to choose from (one of which you would be forced to take, thus justifying a price that would limit it to 8 per list).

I wouldn't be shocked to see official uglies coming from ffg at some point, especially since they are now appearing recurrently in the Resistance animated series.

True. These are based on the old Legends Uglies that are pretty standard rather than the Resistance custom ones though. I expect those Uglies would definitely be better than my junkheaps' stats.

I am looking at making some Uglies from a few TIE/fo I have but won't be using, and some spare Rebel ships (A-wing, E-wing, and K-wing) to create unique Uglies that arent canon- more like the individual hotrod-style Resistance Uglies.

So I used Hinnyboy's excellent plug-in for the Strange Eons creator, so here are my Uglies cards. Here's the direct link https://imgur.com/a/9i2wiMX

The ship icon in the lower left indicates the dial used for the ship. If you have any comments/critism please post it- I'm not sure on some of the points values I've put in so I need some help.

PS- If you created and/or know who created any of these images, feel free to give them credit or let me know (I simply searched Google because I have zero artistic talent).

X-Ties still had shields iirc. The shield generator on the X-Wing is right behind the astromech.

Crap, you're right- all the X-TIEs should have 1 shield. Dang, thought I had everything fixed.

Edit- updated the cards/new gallery/previous post with correct X-TIEs.

Your point values need some work. You could run 7 of your generic Y-ties. They would just melt anything. That's 21 attack dice.

Probably true- I wrote these out without any playtesting, just guesswork. That's why I put these out here, for feedback and discussion. Any thoughts alon a starter point cost for them?

Would anybody want to make pilot cards for the y- tie and the type- wing?
