Timing on Rexler's ability?

By ahdaniels76, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The ability says: " After you perform an attack that hits, if you are evading, expose 1 of the defender’s damage cards."

Does this apply to damage dealt in the same attack? Or is the check before damage is dealt and therefore you can only apply the effect to pre-existing damage card(s)?

I searched around and didn't see anything on this... maybe it's too obvious, but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks!

Short answer: Yes, his ability applies to damage he dealt.

Page 5 of the rules reference has a section titled Aftermath where it outlines the timing for abilities that happen 'after the attack'.

Rexler's ability is in this spot at the very end. The additional clause about it being an attack that hits does not affect the timing, just adds an extra trigger that must be met.

Thanks! Solid ability, then.

Yes

So if he is shooting an unshielded ship, he basically turns one of his damages to a crit?

If there are any damage cards on the ship after he shoots, and he has an evade, he flips one face up. it doesn't matter if the ship was shielded when he shot or not.

Or, even if the ship has shields remaining (due to regen effects, or due to Seyn Marana's ability).

Be careful to follow the order correctly. Say Rexy gets a hit and crit through. You may be tempted to just flip both as crits but this is not correct.

For example. You pull hit and the crit is panicked pilot immediately turns down after resolving. THEN you randomly pick between the two face down damage cards. Potentially getting panicked pilot again! Ouch stress x4 !!!!

Same with direct hit.

Yeah, direct hit is extra bad if he just gets one crit through and you eat 3 damage...

Also, if you’re attacking a damaged ship with a jamming beam or tractor beam. If the attack “hits” then you still get to flip one of the damage cards even tho you’re not doing additional damage.

Rexy is so mean...

Rex with juke advanced sensors and homing missile, unshieldrd stuff will take a hit and card flips.
