Do I need to core kit, or can I just buy the conversion kits?

By voltagejim, in X-Wing

So I have 1 of almost every expansion plus the regular and force awakens core kits. For 2.0 do I still need to buy a 2.0 core kit, or can I just buy the rebel, empire, scum conversions?

Also I heard you only get 3 of each upgrade card in the conversion kits. So if I have like 12 proton torpedo cards, and I buy all 3 conversion kits I will get pretty close to having the amount of cards I have now right? ( will get 9 of most shared upgrade cards correct)

You need to find the new Damage deck somehow. The easiest way is to get the new core or go ebay for it. Other than that though, its not a must buy item any more since you can use all 1.0 tokens asteroids shields and stuff. Keep in mind though, several cards are only available in the core and not in the conversion kits, like Luke pilot and Force skills etc.

Drawing the center lines on the old templates is only a matter of how steady a hand you have, and is probably more accurate than some misprinted cores I ve witnessed.

I’d say the new core is necessary if for no other reason than Luke pilot and some force upgrades.

If your intention is to sell off rebels and not play them in 2.0, you probably can get by eBaying a damage deck and the force talent or two you want for Vader, etc.

I believe the core set is the only way to get Force upgrades.

Or buy the ships again

Ebay is a good source for Damage Decks and Range Rulers, although given the rather shoddy quality control I'd recommend new, 2.0 acrylic templates.

Id say the it is a good value. Especially if you go in with someone else to get more than one and split the ships. the templates are so plentiful that you can have spares for replacements. Special only found there cards and damage decks and such are just a bonus.

Just to add one further point: damage decks will be a participation prize at the System Open events.

And then a Scum player descends and has envy to the Rebels and the Imperials who get something they can use from the core set....

Or, an alternative way of looking at this would be: all you need is a set of acrylic templates with the lines on (which almost everyone else will be wanting too), and to buy a damage deck from someone with 2... which is pretty easy since the new cores came with the promo damage deck if you were sensible.

Far lower expenditure for you compared to those of us who want to fly everything.

Supernatural Reflexes is the only one that can be obtained outside of the core set, as it's also in the TIE Advanced. The others are all currently exclusive to the core.

Well right now there are 2 universal components you need that are only found in the core set.

  • 2nd edition maneuver templates
  • 2nd edition damage deck

Now I was told that those that ordered a conversion kit should have a promotional damage deck, so that leaves the 2nd edition maneuver templates. (funny how 1 line makes a difference). I don't know if any 3rd party developer has made acrylic templates for 2nd edition yet but I assume some will already be out.

As for everything else you could get from 1st edition and the conversion kits (dice, obstacles, tokens, ect.).

While that is correct for the components, there are pilots and upgrades that are not available anywhere except in the new core:

  • Luke Skywalker (T-65 pilot)
  • Jek Porkins
  • Iden Versio
  • Valen Rudor
  • "Night Beast"
  • R2-D2 (Astromech)
  • R5-D8
  • Instinctive Aim
  • Sense
  • Some Quick Build Cards (there are no Quick Build Cards in the conversion kits)
  • One of only two places to get Afterburners (which is not in the conversion kits)

In my opinion, the core set has enough value for a Rebel or Imperial player to make it worth buying, even if you can get the damage deck and templates elsewhere.

True, but almost in a similar argument when Scum first came out if you are not playing those factions you do not need those pilots/models. Get a couple IG-2000 Aggressors, a dice pack, 3rd party movement templates, the only thing you would be missing is a damage deck. Sure you won't have everything to build the top bro bot list but you would have enough for standard.

as you share a damage deck during game just use your opponents and itll be fine. pretty poor sportsmanship for an opponent to complain about it

well not really, sharing a damage deck works fine in those training missions where you only have a single X-wing and a couple of TIE Fighters on the table. However in standard games and especially now that FFG has adjusted ships to have more hull over shields, ruining out of damage cards was common when a damage deck is shared. Then there is also card counting and tracking damage. If you know your opponents has drawn 4 direct hits, then you really don't have to worry too much about a crit dealing double damage.

Besides, both players are required to have a damage deck at any formal setting.
