Loving MDF Terrain/Products

By Crawfskeezen, in Star Wars: Legion

I'm sure many of you are already on this boat but for those of you that are not, you have to check it out.

MDF terrain is my new favourite thing.

I've been wargaming for years and I used to (and still do) just make my own terrain which was great for hills, rocks, rubble, craters, ruined buildings, etc... and I got pretty good at it, but I always had trouble with whole, proper, not destroyed buildings and doodads. I just recently got a bunch of MDF stuff from a couple different companies (Miniature Scenery in Australia, and Multiverse Gaming which I believe is in Poland) and I think the stuff is great, I highly recommend both companies. I love just putting the stuff together and I'm looking forward to putting it on the table on Friday.

The price points can be a bit high for some people but personally I think it's worth it. I can use it for different games and it still looks great just sitting on the shelf. I'm looking forward to getting some of the Battle Kiwi stuff in the near future.

Has anyone had any issues with MDF? I know a couple other companies that sell the stuff (Battle Kiwi, Deathray Games) but I'm always looking for more. Specifically North American companies. I live in Canada and the shipping from other continents can be pricy and lengthy.

If you're looking for a US-based supplier, check out Every Little War*. They just recently started cutting/shipping Miniature Scenery items as well.

I really like MDF terrain. I've found it tends to be cheaper, and the flat surfaces generally enhance playability. The resin cast stuff looks great, but I curse every time my Infinity minis fall over because they can't stand on the omni-present rubble surfaces...

*(Full disclosure: some of my work is available on there under "NEMA". Working on populating it with some more stuff over time.)

If you’re looking for a lot of buildings for a low price check out this starter set from Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/581002406/star-wars-legion-mdf-terrain-core-set?ref=shop_home_active_4

I’ve enjoyed the look and size of the buildings though they are not very big. The plastic domes can be a hinderance, bout you don’t need to use them necessarily. They do help protect snipers though ?

I know a future Kickstarter is coming from him as well for even more variety.

Scarif anyone?

You may be already aware but Battle Kiwi product is available on imperialterrain.com even though they are primarily a 3D printed store Dave now works with a number of other terrain designers to make it a one stop shop.

You can shop 3D printed items, Resin Cast and MDF terrain as well as PDF files to print your own terrain.

Last I looked, Noble Knight was selling TTCombat MDF terrain. The selection at Noble Knight is a bit weak compared to the UK online store, but Noble Knight is North American...

Yep I got a Bunch of TT Combat Stuff I am in the process of painting, will have to share the results when done. Great value for money though.

Any recommendations for MDF carrying trays? I've seen them at events, no idea who made them (unfortunately).

I only checked out Battlekiwi for terrain but I know they have a battle box with unit trays, if that's what you mean.

Anyone have any advice about painting MDF stuff? I recently picked up some MDF bases and terrain for another game, and and have seen some comments about it needing some sort of sealant to prevent warping. Haven’t been able to find specific details on what that means or how to go about it.

If this purported problem is easily solvable, I’d definitely like to pick up some of this Legion-compatible stuff—I love the way the MDF terrain looks, feels, and assembles!

You absolutely want some kind of sealer primer. Pretty much anything that says “sealer” on it. The issue is that MDF rapidly soaks up non-sealer primers/paints. I’m not sure if warping is a huge issue (intuition says it probably is), but you definitely empty your spray can faster! Once you’ve sealed it, you can use pretty much any acrylic paints you like. This is the primer I’ve used myself, but there are others:

MDF is, in essence, a paper product. It absorbs moisture pretty readily. This includes humidity, so, if one side of the terrain is painted and finished and the other is raw MDF, you run the risk of the raw side absorbing moisture from the air and causing it to warp. Also, anything which cures by drying out (including but not limited to paint, PVA glue, and air dry clay) tends to shrink as it dries, and this can cause the side with the shrinkage to curl up. All of these issues can be minimized by painting both sides of the MDF. It need not really be a specific special paint, most any work with a couple coats in my experience.
