Oriental adventures has ALWAYS been very niche

I am going to bring up something hugely controversial. Not all ip's need to be hugely profitable to all companies and there are still companies that feel that certain products are doing perfectly fine even if they don't have a huge revenu stream. I actually think that FFG still has enough of a funloving mentality to put out some games they know will not be huge money makers but will please people and do a lot of good for their brand as a whole.

I agree. But it also means they are not going to follow the D&D model. They will follow a model that will be profitable at a smaller scale.

Example, the Star Wars line. This isn't a complaint, although I've heard plenty of dissatisfaction at the way FFG has been handling SW in regards to multiple books with redundant info (I.E. the 3 core books) and unique Force powers or other things in adventures, making people, who will otherwise never run a game, "have" to buy them to get the rules.

In any case, I feel it's a perfect example of how FFG turns a niche product, and the Star Wars tabletop rpg IS niche despite it being star wars, into a profitable line without being ridiculous about it like DnD 4th edition which was just insane in its release schedule and volume of offerings.

I expect FFG to release splat books for each of the houses as well as adventures and a splat or two for the minor clans too. If they keep the excellent level of quality writing and setting as they have with Star Wars, I'm in.

And L5R does not have 3 core genres like Star Wars does so no multiple cores. I think FFG was wise to handle things the way they did...i was annoyed because i wanted force first. But by waiting we got force that worked.

Star Wars Roleplaying has never been a niche game within the RPG sphere. Nor has Star Trek, when one's been in print.

Those two licenses are valuable. Most others are not.

And FFG Star Wars is 3 slots in the top 10 lines.

D&D and Pathfinder command #1 and #2...

It will be interesting to see the ICV2 stats for this quarter...

Umm no. Both are niche. Always have been. They are profitable yes. But when it comes to print runs they have always been way smaller than D&D. When you tell someone you roleplay and thenperson doesnt know what it is you say "Like D&D" and they kinda get it. You dont say like Star Wars because they will think movie not rpg.

"Not being the most well-known TTRPG" and "being niche" are not synonymous.

QFT.

Star Wars and Star Trek were profitable and both have brought in non-gamers to the RPG hobby. I've seen both properties, and the 40K line, in mainstream bookstores, dead tree on shelves. I bought some of my LUG-Trek stuff at Barnes & Noble.

Waldenbooks carried WEG (including Star Wars and Paranoia) as a regular line, along with BECMI D&D, through most of the 90's, and core books for AD&D2e, plus FASA Trek.

B&N has (within the last decade) carried WotC's SWSE, BI/FFG's Warhammer 40K RPGs, Decipher's Star Trek (and still has some in warehouse stock...) D&D 3.X, 4.X and 5E, and Pathfinder.

Niche games aren't the ones sold in mainstream bookstores. There the ones that you have to go to a specialist game store to get, or order on-line.

Star Wars has never, since release, been niche. And FFG is one of the companies that has direct lines to big box book stores. (SJG is using Target for their new boardgames... and aren't the only company doing so.)

Star Wars has, under WEG, and is again, under FFG, growing the gaming populace by drawing non-gamers into the hobby via accessible starter rules at a reasonable starting price.

They are using the same strategy with L5R that they did with Star Wars, and I'd not be surprised to see L5R finally in mass market stores like B&N.

Bottom line, the only way FFG Star Wars is Niche is if EVERY BLOODY RPG EVER is considered Niche. It's got the non-gamer exposure factor.

star wars ffg rpg is NOT niche. who said that lol ?

but, it is also a GREAT product (sure have a few flaws) but it is easy, fast, beautiful, clean. It does the job.

L5R is lot more bloated and hardcore and with quite a few rules that needs polishing and rewording to make them better and cleaner. It is still an AMAZING product for fans of the samurai setting/l5r and hardcore gamers, but it is not a "welcoming" product in its current state.

Maybe you dont get what niche is. Every rpg is niche. Star wars is niche with in that niche. That is the reality of rpgs. And book being carried in a barnes and noble does not change that fact.

In other words, you're shifting the context from Niche RPG to Niche activity overall.

Nice goalpost move...

you just made every recreation activity other than sex and soccer/football niche.

Wait. There are other activities? Who knew about this!? What else aren't people telling me?

Dude...

I prefer to watch rugby union and/or hockey. (not picky about ice vs roller vs field hockey.)

When taking a quick look for traditional japanese sports, I don't see any team sports that predate the Meiji period except Kemari - and that one's non-competitive. (Kemari is essentially hackey-sack with a ball about the size of a round-ball football.)

I could see Kemari as an elimination sport - if your kick isn't taken by someone else, you're out.

Great for a Passion though.

Absolutely love hockey. I watched almost every one of my teams' games live in the last two Winter Olympics, which here in the US was really early, or really late, depending. Got bigger into soccer/football (as in, those are same, not as in two different sports) last summer when I was living walking distance from the local club's stadium.

I dunno, man. How does the Imperial Court feel about blonde dreadlocks and hemp kimono?

Depends on the gift you make to the Emperor before they ask about it.

New preview. Talks about GM back end stuff, like history, cosmology, economy, etc.

Confirms yoriki is a new title.

My question is how longnisnit gonna be at the printer? And how long is rise of the seperatists going to be in the boat?

The upcoming page has become pretty much useless...
