Sword Attack Group

By Bad Idea Comics, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been playing this list with some solid success and it's just surprisingly fun to fly.

Scimitar Squadron, Barrage Rockets

It's ridiculously simple, list wise. I've found Soontir draws fire well to permit everything else to shoot whatever's in front of them. It works with both tight formations and loose formations. It works if I win initiative (I get a bit dodgy) or if I lose initiative (I hit hard and fast). It balances effectiveness with fun and a good deal of flexibility - it can be fast or slow, it can be dodgy or jousty. Finally, with five ships, it throws a lot of dice, so the law of averages takes over - it does pretty consistent damage.

Has anyone else been using a list like this? Any thoughts on it?

Closest I've come is this:

  • Soontir Fel (Outmaneuver)
  • Captain Jonus (Saturation Salvo, Barrage Rockets)
  • Gamma Squadron Veteran (Saturation Salvo, Barrage Rockets)
  • Gamma Squadron Veteran (Saturation Salvo, Barrage Rockets)
  • Total 190, Bid 10

I probably would have run with Jonus + 3x Scimitars if I had enough ships and dials and Barrage Rockets. I feel like having an extra 3-dice attack would be worth more than the Saturation Salvos and a pricey Talent on Soontir. I think the game wound up with 1 bomber on half HP left at the end. Soontir got nailed when Wullffwarro stalled, and I just barely slipped in along side rather than bump.

Anyhow, I like your list in theory. I'm often tempted by multiple Interceptor lists, but they often feel like they're... missing the meat? Having something more jousty like some Barrage Scimitars to dawdle along makes sense to me.

That's probably just me. All-nimble lists scare me, because I don't feel like I have something I can toss out, risk some chips shots on.

The Sabers work because they're In4. You can typically get three shots (Soontir and his Sabers) on a target before they get to fire, if you have the initiative. If you're shooting second, you just slip out of harm's way and blast targets at your leisure, when possible. You're right to be scared of this list's squishiness though - flying poorly results in a short game, which I've also experienced as well.
