third role question.

By Kazasaky, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

i heard about third role.

when will each clans get third role?

winter court 2018 is 2 role. the other one?

Clans will only have 2 active roles at a time, however there are now 3 times per year that a new role is selected. Each clan received a new role from the votes cast during the Toshi Ranbo kotei season. At Winter Court 2018, clans selected new roles to replace their roles selected at last year's Winter Court. So right now, the Toshi Ranbo season role and the Winter Court 2018 role are the active roles for each clan.

Next year, there are 2 Elemental Championship seasons which will run January - March and May - July. These are series of championship events that will have the top players from each clan cast votes for new roles for their respective clans. At the end of the first season, in March, these votes will determine new roles which will replace the Toshi Ranbo roles. Then at the end of the second season, in July, the votes will determine new roles which will replace the Winter Court 2018 roles.

When Winter Court 2019 comes, the clans will each still have 2 active roles, which at that point will be the roles voted for in March and July during the Elemental Championship seasons. Clans will pick new roles once more, and these new roles will replace the older active roles, selected in March.

What about the new roles being introduced through the Clan Packs?

Support of the Phoenix and Support of the Scorpion can be played by any clan. Only the Seeker and Keeper roles are limited to specific clans.

Sorry, but what are you talking about?

Honestly, are there new roles in the clan packs? ?

Support of Clan X roles are in the packs. They let you take 8 influence from that clan without the usual Keeper/Seeker or Elemental benefits. As per the deck construction rules they are separate from the official roles and are always legal.

page 3 - Tournament regulations version 2.3 - 4th Paragraph under Deck Building

"A player may include their clan’s role card, a non-Keeper/Seeker role (such as Support of the Phoenix), or no role when selecting cards for their decks and provinces. Role cards alter the deck building rules described herein. The roles for each clan can be found on our website at FantasyFlightGames.com/OP/L5R-LCG/Roles" (note the page has not yet been updated with Winter Court 2018 roles and still shows last years and the Kotei roles as available).

I think it was a joke about how unusable the support of roles are

Scorpion and Phoenix don't always mesh so well as choices for "Support of" roles, however, I've seen some competitive lists with Support of the Phoenix.

As more clans get rolled out the "Support of" and the general card pool grows, it's only a matter of time before they begin to make an impact on the competitive scene.

If Dragon or Crab had come out as one of the first two clan packs we might have already seen the "Support of" roles more frequently in competitive play.

Scorpion and Phoenix conflict cards are somewhat more difficult to integrate into other clans as effectively, but, if I knew I could splash Dragon for Let Go and still have 12 Influence to work with, suddenly this changes how people approach deckbuilding.

I suspect 2019 Will be the breakout year for the "Support of" roles.

Top of Clan Lion deck at Worlds ran Support of the Scorpion.

I feel like often Keeper won't matter during a game, so it *might* be worthwhile to get an extra 5 influence (18 instead of 13 for elemental Keepers).

Maybe this is why they did so poorly? Not a comment on the player, but, if those are the lengths Lion has to go to in order to be "competitive" it's pretty clear the clan has issues.

They aren't core edition Unicorn bad, but, filling in with a "SOS" role is a bit of a reach.

Hats off to the player for being creative and making the most of a bad situation.

Yeah, Lion Dishonor Yojin no Shiro Bid One Turn One Support of the Scorpion.

Weirdest deck I’ve seen in competitive. And that stream against Crab was also a very weird match.

Phillipe-Andre Pelletier (Lion) vs Stephen Didion (Crab) if somebody wants to see the match in FFGLive Twitch Stream.

He reached Top 32, so not bad. Also, there weren’t too much Lion players, only 4 reached Final Day, so for that deck to be there it means that it works... somehow.

He's said it isn't actually a turn 1 bid one normally but that's how he plays it against Crab (where the early dishonor pressure can really hurt them). For most others he apparently bids 5 turn 1 for cards than ratchets down after that.

Again, I'm not knocking the player from being creative and coming up with something that was able to get as high as it did.

It's just a shame Lion is essentially forced into such a situation I the first place.

It's a very similar feeling to playing early Unicorn where you couldn't really threaten your opponent in any meaningful way and had to use surprise tricks and generally bad lines of play that somehow worked out if all the stars aligned.

Nobody should be forced into that kind of a deck. So mad props to the Lion for running with it.

Keeper matters less than Keeper only cards. I have considered SotP in Unicorn but Talisman is too good not to play.

I dunno anymore. With FoF moving to the RL Unicorn isn't putting up much of a back row, unless they want to remove Charge from their decks and I don't think that is correct for them.

If we assume FoF is not being used so Unicorn goes back to Meditations which, while decent, is not nearly as much of a high impact play with Talisman. You're essentially back to the same province line up before the KoF role.

If the "Support of" roles had a deeper suite of impactful cards I think they beat the benefits of Keeper roles. Phoenix and Scorpion conflict cards just aren't as broadly effective across all clans like Dragon and Crab.

Still the Support of the Phoenix deck I've tested with Unicorn is right on par with the Keeper decks I've run with Crab, Dragon, and Phoenix splashes, and ahead of the early testing I've done with Seeker roles.

However, once the big box comes out and Toturi is available to Unicorn, I see Keeper being the clear choice again, at least until the Dragon, Crab, and Lion get their clan packs and all the "Support of" roles go online.

Of course ymmv, but that has been my experience with Unicorn role experimentation so far. Hopefully I can get some time with a few of the other clans now that I have a little more free time.
