Does Dash Suck as Much as Everyone Says?

By Hoarder of Garlic Bread, in X-Wing

Just a question posed for those trying to make him work. I'd imagine that Outrider offers counterplay to Sloane or locks and allows actions after K-turns or removing the stress after a red barrel roll. Trick shot and stealth device look very spicy when you have someone coordinating one mod and dash taking the other (perhaps with Jyn and Squad leader whilst Dash takes perceptive Co pilot?). And hotshot gunner looks neat, unless I overvalued that card.

But man, even Leebo is pricey.

He's VERY hard to balance rn at his price. He's good, but they need to find his sweet spot.

His synergy with Han Gunner and Roark doesn't help.

No kidding. 2 PS 7 focused attacks, maybe one TL'd, 4 dice base value - thats so bloody powerful that reducing him would make it unreasonable, but as he stands, its really such a glass cannon list

and the fact that an ace can no longer jump in his donut hole to hide means his old nemesis the arc dodging ace is actually at a disadvantage

Though he only throws 3 at r1

Most large base lists are now.

That's still a 3/3 with Han Gunner + Roark at init 7... Not fun.

I had a friend trying out Dash yesterday. His observation was that you still need to fly away on Dash. There are some things Init 7 double tap, followed by a 3-dice HWK attack will just own . I was testing out 3 Kirhaxzes and a YV-666, and they'd just get popped, one K-Fighter a round pretty much.

A different friend was flying a Dash/Jan list for 5-dice attacks two weeks ago, and it didn't really work out (Bistan gunner for a cleave, but no same-target doubles). A lot was a "fly at the enemy" vs a "fly away from the enemy" strategy.

In general, I think folks might be sleeping on fat turrets. Dash and Lando (with Roark, Lando can also double-tap 4 dice at range 1, with potentially better action economy) and maybe even rebel Han falcon are better than expected. Just think about Han for a second. Two rerolls on his green die, and R2-D2 crew to regen shields, and you'll be able to reroll the die to see whether you expose a damage card or not. I recall reading someone doing the math, figuring out that Han would actually take less damage in 2e than in 1e from a TIE swarm...

I've been dabbling with moderate success in Whisper RAC. Whisper is a glass cannon, but RAC does not go quickly, especially with novice tech and tua. Hotshot can sometimes lend itself to longetivity.

I did say most... The Decimator is the notable exception to the glass part.

Yuck Dash.

Its not even that great TBH and only really "good" if your opponent straight up flys badly. Certainly nowhere near tournament good. Its not like hes gonna 1 shot any of the I5/6 Torp carriers who are much cheaper and efficient list wise. Not to mention If youre competent enough at all to make him have to rotate arcs the combo doesnt even work at all since he has no way to get another action. Even at 10 points cheaper this list is mediocre. At 204points you get the bare minimum upgrades required to pull the combo off plus a naked AP5 to coordinate. 6 points left to put something else on Dash or toss something on your 2 naked support ships.....Meh. I really wonder what lists they playtested 2.0 Dash with were they decided "Yeah this is totally competitive and worthy of 100 pts baseline" Like what wingment were they using?

List doing the rounds with us is Dash with title, Bistan, Per Co-Pilot and Trick Shot. Jan, MC, Juke and Jyn.

Pretty scary.

Uh, except that he now has 2 gigantic pie slices that they can fly into instead. It’s way easier to arc dodge Dash now if you’re moving after him. Not sure why everyone seems to forget that. And now the only way Dash doesn’t lose an attack die or give them an extra defense die is at range 2.

2 4 die attacks, or 5 die against reduced agility, both focused, could most definitely wipe out pretty much any of the more efficient ordnance jousters

He hits like a hammer and with Bistan gunner, title and trickshot is very scary to low health ships. His price point is very awkward. I'm afraid that adjusting his cost any lower would put him in a very NPE area of play and it just gives you that much more wiggle room to squeeze in a better +1 or two weaker +2's.

Is alpha Dash really the best Dash though? By keeping him a bit cheaper and playing the long game you can fit more wingmen, and better ones at that.

Dash Rendar (100)

  • Trick Shot (1)
  • Perceptive Copilot (10)

Thane Kyrell (48)

  • Predator (2)
  • Servomotor S-foils (0)
  • R2 Astromech (6)

AP-5 (30)

  • Elusive (3)

Total: 200

Try to stay at R3 for as long as possible, then either block or dodge depending on opponent, and get out before you regroup for another pass. Fly in a loose formation such that any attack on Dash gets them right in Thane's crosshairs, and vice versa.
