How would you guys do twin sister blades?
Twin Sister Blades
durable katana and wakazashi that require an extra op to use the snaring condition I guess
I ported all of the 4E sacred weapons, barring Mantis and Spider.
Kaiu Blade : Katana; Ceremonial, Resplendent, Sacred, Durable, Razor-Edged; +1 DMG, +1 DLS; Add a kept black opp die when attacking Otherworldly or Tainted beings
Kakita Blade: Katana; Ceremonial, Resplendent, Durable, Razor-Edged; 1h: +2 DLS; When using any Iaijutsu Cut Kata, add a kept black opp die to the Attack roll
Twin Sister Blades: Katana and Wakizashi; Ceremonial, Resplendent, Durable, Razor-Edged; Opponents must pay an extra opp to disarm or entangle your weapons. +1 to Mirumoto Niten Adept School Rank for Way of the Dragon School Ability effects
Akodo Blade : Katana; Ceremonial, Resplendent, Durable, Razor-Edged; +1 DMG; Honor Rank of the carrier is considered to be one higher for any mechanical effects (for Kata, Shuji, Skills, opportunities, etc)
Inquisitor Strike: Wakizashi; Ceremonial, Sacred, Durable, Razor-Edged; Add one kept black opp die when using an Invocation that purifies targets
Shosuro Blade: Katana; Ceremonial, Durable, Razor-Edged; +4 DLS if any poison is applied to the blade (stacks with bonus deadliness from the poison, if any)
Moto Scimitar: Scimitar; Resplendent, Durable, Razor-Edged; +1 DMG, +1 DLS; While on horseback, add a kept black opp die on Attack or Movement rolls using the weapon
Edited by omnicroneThis is excellent!!
I recall the Kaiu blade was not just robust but downright unbreakable... given that all other blades in this version are (rightfully) Durable, one could add a special treatment just for the Kaiu swords?
And I would reserve the Sacred quality to the Inquisitor’s Strike. Instead, the Kaiu blade could treat the target’s Resistance as one point lower? (That’s what the 4E version was more about: -2 to all Reductions, not only the big bad Oni’s).
Yeah, I believe the Kaiu blade was very well made, but mundane, owing to the fact that the Kaiu are not a shuggie school. So something that just enhances it's durability and sharpness makes sense, but Sacred doesn't (necesarily).
Would spending OP to decrease resistance b OP? Something like 2 opportunity to reduce physical resistance by 1?

Really nice! I was coming to ask how would you guys would port Kaiu blades, Kakita blades, etc to the new system... haha. My players are converting their characters to FFG's L5R and one has a Kaiu blade. Since we got the Kakita blade sneak preview during beta I was hoping they would be in the core book. I guess we'll have to wait for Emerald Empire? What do you guys think?
Meanwhile these are some nice conversions. My thoughts, like the rest... There's no reason why Kaiu blade would get a bonus vs Otherworldly/Tainted beings. Cant recall it had any of such properties. I would just make it extra durable. Like, perhaps add a new weapon quality: Unbreakable: This weapon cant gain the item quality Destroyed. This way, it can be Damaged but not Destroyed.
Good work!
Edit: Also perhaps this should be moved to houserules so we can have it there and doesnt get buried here.

I got super confused with the Kaiu Blade for a moment and ended up conflating its effect with the Crab ancestral weapon which is something completely different.
Kaiu Blade : Katana; Ceremonial, Resplendent, Unbreakable, Razor-Edged; Ignores 2 physical armor;
Unbreakable: if this equipment should gain Damaged, ignore the effect. If this equipment should gain Destroyed, it loses Unbreakable and gains Durable instead. Unbreakable can be re-applied to an equipment that lost this quality with a TN 6 Smithing (Earth) check.

I would use the name Armor-Piercing (like the arrows; pg 236): Ignores up to 2 points of the target's physical resistance.
Made a table for my games.

I'd like to point out that we do have an example of a Kakita Blade (Omeka on page 233) in the book.
Omeka Melee Range 1 Damage 4 Deadliness 10 1-hand:- 2-handed:+2 Deadliness Ceremonial, Razor-Edged Durable, Resplendent and Destroys any weapon used for Shattering Parry against it.

Indeed. That's the same blade that was previewed during Beta. To be honest I had/have the feeling that Omeka, which is Doji Kuwanan's sword, is quite above your average Kakita blade. I dunno. Otherwise, if this is the standard kakita blade, i think it might be a bit overpowered.

kakita cannot win a duel otherwise

I believe the intention is to make the "sacred weapons" much more individual and impressive rather than generic better than normal weapons.
I think its a bad idea to try and directly import the 4e version of the sacred weapons and their abilities.

Could be. Thats another approach to make them unique and each one different.
The thing is, they were something that players could start with (paying their advantages points) in the old edition. Its not like every character has one, but in my group, the Hida does. It is a heirloom, passed down in the family for generations. So, a gm that wants to move his campaign to this new edition has to find a fix for that. I could take it away from the player explaining that they are now scarcer and more powerful, but Id rather make something less powerful that can be handled to the players.
If you want something less powerful, use the Heirloom heritage table result and slap two interesting and possibly custom qualities on a weapon. I had a duelist who went with "Wargear Resplendent" Katana, gave them quite an edge in duels. One player is eyeballing Sacred Ceremonial Zanbato right now...

Omeka is halfway from a "generic" Kakita Blade from older editions and a Clan ancestral sword. I liked the design principles that went behind this approach to make them more unique and I will use them on my campaign. My port was a quick and dirty solution for people that are converting their ongoing 4E characters/campaigns to 5E, like some of my friends.
