Finally finished my “desert” Scouts! **Now with the "Desert Battalion"**

By mr_mithrandir, in Painting

Had fun trying some different techniques on these guys. The "camo" look was Army Painter's Strong Tone blotched randomly. Only a couple of minor touch ups to do! I also included a couple of extra photos. Terrain by @Sword named Folly

Nice work man. I am not huge on the alternate color schemes, even though people do a great job painting them. But your desert scout troopers look fantastic and really thematic too. I have two sets of these to do and I might just have to borrow the idea.

I also really like your Boba Fett.

Thank you! I now have a desert stormie, desert snowy unit, desert biker unit, desert scout unit. I like the one alternate themed group. They have been fun.

I did the scouts basing in citadels desert color (can’t remember the name) then hit the whole model with a little watered down soft tone from army painter. Added the splotches at the end.

@mr_mithrandir maybe Zandri Dust? I have that but also a Vallejo color called “Iraqi sands” which is a bit lighter that should produce a similar effect. I may try that. I’m also wondering if maybe a dark warm brown might look nice in place of the black cloth or if that would be too much brown. Decisions decisions. This will be fun to think about while I am traveling for the next couple of weeks.

All your minis look fantastic! The board is excellent as well! Very nicely done. Would love to see more pictures of your board and other terrain.

It’s Zamesi Desert. I’m sure the color you have will get the desired effect. You can always use a soft tone wash not watered down to darken it? I never considered dark brown… could be too much but you can test it all on one model to see if you like it. I basically did that with the scout unit leader to test out the colors together.

Thank you!! I’ll be sure to take some detailed photos next set up.

All the terrain you see is made by my buddy @Sword named Folly. We need to convince him to share more photos on the terrain thread.

As someone else said, not generally a fan of the alternate schemes, but **** that works so well. Great job.

Your Scout Troopers look great. I like making an alternate paint scheme squad. I must have at least one movie accurate or "canon" squad though. (which can be seen on my thread) I think you did an amazing job making these look very thematic to the terrain. Your friend has done an amazing job creating terrain. My hat, if I was wearing one, goes off to you both.

I went ahead and added the whole "Desert" Battalion. I have enjoyed this paint scheme so much I keep doing it... The rest of my army are based in a normal forrest color with cannon schemes. But Krayt Battalion seems to always be stuck in hostile environments. I attempted to get some shots of our terrain board, although a full documentation will have to wait until the next time these boys see real action. I think I finally need to pony up for a desert mat...

Excellent work on the troops mate.

All of these look great. I did the same thing with my Snow Troopers. I went heavier on the Seraphim Sepia wash and created an "extreme environment" desert squad.

Want a quick fix for a desert mat. Visit Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabric or something similar if you don't live in the U.S. and purchase a length of tan felt. It is a fraction of the price. Another trick is to visit your local hardware store and purchase a length of outdoor or marine carpet. They come several colors (tan, green, black and blue)and are sold in 6 foot widths. You might find a remnant or mis-cut, usually 6 x 6 or less for a considerable discount.

Those look great!

The more I see snows with brown or khaki cloth bits, the more I like them. Good stuff.

I also plan to do similar with my Snow Troopers.

For a desert mat I just found a sand coloured textured table cloth for cheap on Amazon. Does the trick has a second function if left around on the table afterwards. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00V5PAW4S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for the tip! Those sound like solid options

I’m seriously considering having my entire army go this direction
