Trying to decide if I want to have a Legion Army...

By Bakura83, in Star Wars: Legion

I assume a 44 point squad of Fleet troopers contains 4 figures because of the 4 with the up arrow on the top right of the card, and you can add extras for 11points each, is there a maximum anywhere? Is there a hard limit to how big a squad can be or a gameplay reason why it’s better not to have as large a squad as possible?

Upgrades the unit can take are listed on the left side of the card.

You can can only take as many upgrades as are listed so one personnel upgrade (11 pts for the extra trooper) and the heavy weapon upgrade of your choice for adding another mini (with corresponding heavy weapon) to the unit.

Sometimes its better to not take the extra trooper to save points to maybe add another unit to your force; sometimes not. Most people look at the extra mini as “one more hit point before I lose my heavy weapon”.

A box of corp troopers (Storm, fleets, etc) comes with 7 models. A base squad is 4 with the option for an additional trooper and a heavy weapon model. So you have a leader trooper, 4 generic troopers, and 2 heavy weapons.

For the standard 800 point game you must have a commander and 3 corps in your army. After that you can fill out your army like so.

3-6 Corps

0-3 special forces

0-3 support

0-2 Heavy

0-2 operatives

1-2 Commanders.

So is the leader trooper a possible commander slot or an upgrade the squad can have, or just as astetically different but counts as one of the troopers in the unit?

A fleet trooper box has everything you need to make a max size squad, plus one left over heavy with the weapon you didn’t choose? IE the max squad size is 6: 4 base troopers + 1 extra + 1 heavy?

Allso, is there a place you can see what squads cost to plan out your purchases or do you only get the costs when you actually buy the unit? It seems really inferior to the GW model of all unit rules/stats/costs in one codex...

1 No a Commander is like Vader or Leia. When you move a trooper, you move the leader then place the others in cohesion of the leader. I haven't looked at the rules in a while though.

2 Yes

3 Tabletop Admiral has a squad builder.

Do yourself a favor and download the learn to play book from the product page. It'll give you the information you need and help you better inform your purchases. If you have any questions not answered by that, the rules reference is also available for download.

all rules and info are online no wasting you money on codecs like GW I use play that and they always update book and that mean i have drop another $30 and that another unit i can't get then.

1. Yes, you want the Legion army. It’s a ton of fun.

2. For squad building, I suggest starting with reading the learn to play resource on FFG’s website. There is a hard copy of the learn to play guide inside the core set, but the pdf is free and you haven’t bought anything yet.

3. Right now the competive meta favors lots of units (often 6x corps and multiple special forces). You don’t HAVE to play that way (especially if you’re playing fun games with friends).

As others have answered, a squad maxes out at 6 minis (the squad leader, 4 soldiers, one heavy weapon). However, the “extra troop” upgrade is one I rarely take. It makes more sense to save those and put the points into an extra squad (4x extra troops cost the same as a new unit, so just bring a new unit in). The biggest gameplay reason for this is more squads is usually more advantageous than less “fatter” ones.

Id disagred with that last statement, while , in general I do agree with it, there is another factor , lost offense as well. For a stormtrooper the extra figure adds 1 one white dice to the attack pool, which is far from stellar, the rebel trooper adds a black dice , which is a little better as it hits 4 out 8 times in comparison with the Stormtroopers 3, which is still not enough to swing being worth the extra points, but if you want to add Fleet Troopers who add 2 white to the pool and with surge this is 2 chances of 3 out of 8 so an average 6 hits out of 8 , which is 0.75 hits perr figure , compare with 0.5 for the rebel trooped, or 0.375 for storm or snowtroopers, So for me the extra trooper for the fleet trooper is well worth it for the extra offense it brings, thd rebel trooper less so, and for the imps they are just speed bumpz to protect the heavy weapon.

Thanks everyone. I might get a single expansion and see if the painting bug hits me like it did back with GW. If they add a cooler rebel vehicle I’d probably be sold - I’m not sure if they would ever release an A, U or X wing to the game but that would be pretty hard to resist.

They're probably too large (ESPECIALLY the U-Wing) and don't really fit into the army scale (platoon plus, basically) of this game. Veers and Leia both have command cards that simulate calling in fire from off-table starships or AT-ATs.

My table was a work in progress at this point....but....U wing...

Oh and look, an Xwing has landed on Tatooine, just before imperial troops decide to make a patrol and kill any rebels...
