Ion Cannon Turrets

Sure but is Ion damage worth a full point of damage? Which is better, the Ion token or the face down damage card. The new ion turret gives you that choice. Add on that you are paying squadron points for what essentially is a nerfed attack and that is what Ion turrets is when. The only benefit it gives to Y-wings is +1 attack die so a better chance to git damage, and a mobile arc attack so you can cover more area. But nothing you can really plan an Ion damage list around. If the Y-wing was 3 firepower, then the opportunity cost of the Ion turret goes up to where it is not worth it.

Depends on the ship. It's definitely worth it on a Y-wing, as that ion token can keep a target in range next round. That can be very important on such a slow ship. It also let's Norra maintain range 1 for her ability. For other ships, not so much.

Also anything that can carry VTG can allow for more damage and gives the control that ion gives much more mileage. In numbers the ion tokens stack up pretty quickly. My 3 ion turret Y-wings ionized and burned down a Firespray in one turn for example. A single ion turret with nothing benefiting from it is where the value drops off.

I would have liked a slightly different wording on the card. Make the damage optional. That way you could deal 1 ion instead of the 1 damage. Or deal 2 ions instead of 1 ion and 1 damage.

That wouldn't be bad. I certainly don't want a return to 1e Ion, where the weapons did a damage and an ion on a single hit, but skipping the damage could work.

At very least, I wouldn't mind seeing it tested.

Until you're on the receiving end of it. If it was optional an opponent with Ion weapons could pick a target and walk it off the board with you praying they roll blanks allot more consistently than they can now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 2.0 ion mechanic mean that the ioned player can choose any blue manuver on the ship dial?

If so, that makes it much harder to walk someone off the edge of the board.

Nope, they have to perform an Ionized maneuver which is a blue 1 straight and don't reveal a dial (can't use Advanced Sensors if you don't reveal a dial). Actions during the Perform Action step are limited to Focus only, and only if you have Focus on your action bar (so Brobots, 4-LOM and Guri don't get an action at all unless one is coordinated to them).

I really enjoy Norra with Predator and ICT with Veteran Turret gunner. She wants to be in r1. And now she gets 3 dice primary and a 4 dice turret shot at the same ship with predator in both rolls and a focus. Well fun. Maybe not competitive. That is kavil!

Except it’s two shots, and you might not need to mod one of them. On an approach with arcs overlaps, 7 dice at range 1 is nothing to sneeze at even if some of them are Ion effects.

The Warthogs of old were more efficient, but less flexible. You can still turn turret and still get a double tap nowadays

I've flown VTG ion Norra, and I have to say I was underwhelmed. Even with veteran turret gunner, her damage output was very poor. Furthermore, she only landed about 2 ion tokens all game (and both were from range 1, if I remember correctly). The biggest advantage of the ion turret over dorsal is that it can do one damage more consistently. If I fly Norra again, she will be carrying torpedoes.

As a side note, afterburners were extremely helpful for triggering Norra's ability, keeping her alive much longer than she had any right to be.
