The 1000 point question

By JediPartisan, in Star Wars: Legion

I know this has been brought up before, but with the Emperor on the cusp of being released, I thought now would be a good time to bring it up again.

So should the 800 point standard game be increased to 1000?

In my opinion it should. I’ll admit I don’t have a lot of data to back this decision, it’s more of a feel. Of course increasing the point limit will increase the length of the game, but it shouldn’t increase it by much (we are only talking 200 points). The main reason I’m bringing this up again is for the Emperor. If you include the Emperor (with a couple of upgrades) and the Royal Guard (with a reasonable amount of upgrades), you’re at about 350 points (almost 1/2 for 2 units). If you want to include Vader or an AT-ST in that list, be prepared for an almost unplayable 6 activation list. Activations ate the big thing now in the meta and though you would be fielding some powerful units, it would be nice to be able to include a few units for support. I know that if the total is increased to 1000, someone will complain that they cant include the Emperor, Vader, the RG and an AT-ST in the same list, but that not withstanding, I still think 1000 points is a better place for the game to be.

What are your thoughts? And before someone berates another person about this, there is not a right or wrong answer, just personal preference, so please remain calm.

I like 800 points. I was going to say exactly what you said at the end of your third paragraph, but then you said it for me. The whole point of the point limit is restriction; you SHOULDN'T be able to bring all of your toys.

I agree with the sentiment... but right now you can barely bring *some* of your toys. Combined arms isn't particularly viable in Legion. 1000 points better matches up with the force organization rules.

It's already possible to fill 13/18 slots at 800 points without really cutting corners (At least for Imperials. 13 Activation Rebels has some issues with Armor). That's excessive as is.

A points increase might make sense if strike teams weren't a thing. But I really don't want to go to a 13-14 activation meta.

Nope, nope, nope.

Force hard choices in list building and keep standard games short.

You are well come to do whatever you want on your home table.

Personally, I'm okay with the game staying at 800 points, partially because adding 200 points is actually quite a bit. It's enough to max out the core slot on most lists I've brewed, and still add some more specialized units, so I think a points increase would almost have to be accompanied by a Force org change.

Honestly, I'd rather see some more Battle Cards, as I think those could potentially cause a bigger change in list compositions.

Keep it at 800. Otherwise the cheap commanders like leia and veers will never be used as solo commanders.

I really liked 800 points because it’s cheaper for players to get into the game.?but 1000 points would be pretty cool, I was thinking about what if I did different types of tournaments 600pt Tournaments, 800pt Tournaments, and 1000pt Tournaments.?

Having played a couple 1000 point games, I definitely think that 800 is the sweet spot. 1000 seems a little clunky, and I like that you have to choose between your expensive units. Vader, Ol' Palpy, and even the AT-ST are meant to be the centerpiece of your army. You can take multiple, but you make sacrifices for it. Now, when you play a casual game there's nothing wrong with changing the points, but the I think competitive games should stay at 800.

This. I know some buddies and I will ultimately play 1000 points but, yeah for tournament play 800 makes sense.

Juat cause its not the tourney standard doesnt mean you cant just set a point limit and have fun. Was involved in a teaching game this weekend that was mostly core set contents and leia. 600pt limit. Was some of the most fun ive had playing the game. Looking forward to a 1000 and 1200 point game in the near future. Play to have fun.

One thing that I find interesting about the tournament set up for Flames of War is that they change the point limits for competitive play each year. I wouldn't mind if FFG did something similar here. Say a week or so after worlds FFG announces the new point total for the fallowing season. Have it set at 800 one year, then the next bump it to 950, and the year after drop it to 725, and so on. The game play can change quite a bit with different point totals, and something as minor as this can really shake up the meta. I don't think I would ever put the limit above 1,000 or below 650. Also I would wait until each faction has a good selection of units.
