They're fine... I guess... I did just totally lose a game to Broba cause of them... But are they top tier??? Intel scan??? What's happening?!?!
dust fields...
I like dust fields.
not nearly as effective if the opponent is used to them. they tend to use them against you just as well.
MSU can live and die by the dust fields. I used to need them against dual Cymoons all the time. Now though....
Intel scan is rather nice.
Dust fields in themselves are an interesting complication. Also, very good for Brunson fleets.
The scoring isn't astronomical, but let's say you get 50+ points. Not too shabby.
And fallout risk should be very slight.
So I like them well enough.
I find it funny how close range Intel scan, once regarded as garbage tier, is now gaining serious consideration... And all in the midst of "348.4367 days since last announcement!" Henny penny talk. Good to see some guys got their eyes on the prize, digging through a bountiful seven waves of content and coming up with new and exciting ways to enjoy the game, all while busting up the meta! Kudos!
Dust clouds + max squads are incredible. I think they are horribly underused due to the prevalence of auto pick objectives like most wanted and contested outpost.
You always get to place at least 1 Of them, so long as you have a plan for it your opponent really can't prevent you abusing it.
Edited by BrobaFettI've used dust fields with 2 ship to my benefit and disaster, usually to my benefit to help my QF.

Doesn’t work.
This is because Jainas light provides two benefits:
You ignore overlapping obstacles.
Your attacks cannot be obstructed.
Wheras a DUST CLOUD DOES NOT ACTUALLY OBSTRUCT your attack if you are a ship. if Los is drawn over it, the attack cannot be made.
Jainas Light doesn’t help that.
(Technically, all obstacles obstruct, and the dust cloud does too, but the obstruction is in addition to the "cannot shoot through", and ignoring obstruction still doesn't help that...)

Blast!
Now if you put a ship over the dust cloud and fire through that ship with Jaina’s Light, that works. Because logic. ?

Logic Indeed!

Wait wouldn't that work with any ship in that scenario??? It would just be obstructed as long as your los doesn't trace over the fields, but over the obstructing ships? Or squads for that matter?

Yep.
You guys should get a life.
It would work with ships, but not squads as per rulebook that squads don't interfere with Los.

They don't interfere with Los... Sip even better... 2 ships on either side of dust fields, can't shoot each other...place a squad in the line of sight so that dot to dot, the line doesn't pass over a visible portion of the dust field, and they can shoot, unobstructed... True?

Just clarified by Ian on the discord - not true.
In his ruling, even a SHIP over the dust cloud would not allow the through-shot. If you can pick the component blocking view up and check line of sight and see obstruction, then the shot is obstructed and incurs any penalties that would resolve.
The ruling for ship obstruction I thought was interesting because I would have agreed a ship would probably allow it as the obstruction of the ship would replace obstruction of the obstacle and we all know obstruction can't stack. But in regards to squads, tokens, other things like that do not normally do not effect line of sight in any way and are just "visual" blocks of the obstruction, it is normal practice to lift those items when measuring line of sight for all obstacles, and the dust cloud would be no exception.

It’s a ruling we’re going to go with, anyway, I feel... even if it’s based on logical assumptions.
We don’t do that often. So Witness Us!

You can all thank me now for showing Ian the light and the way (through the dust).
