Yea, it sure seems like the vast majority of franchises are far better when they are just left alone. For every Mad Max: Fury Road or AL()ENS there are dozens of projects much more like The Predator (2018) or Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles or The Last Jedi. Heck, even with AL()ENS, it's the case that AL()EN^3, AL()EN Ressurection, AvP, AvP2, Prometheus, and Covenant have all been largely disliked or flat-out despised by fans. Much like how while Star Trek: The Next Generation was an amazing reboot of Star Trek, ST:DS9 was pretty great, while Voyager and Enterprise represented rapidly-sliding quality with the JJ Films and ST: Discovery largely be disliked by "trekkies" for being so divergent from what Trek was about.
I whole-heartedly respect the Babylon 5 owners for holding the IP. Just a shame that, after they've passed away and the IP moves through their estates, it will almost certainly be re-booted in some awful, explosion-laden series that shares little with the original source other than name.
I thought Fallen Kingdom was fun, I knew going in that the movie was going to be nonsensical at various points. Michael Fassbender saves Covenant with his performance as David in my opinion. The main problem I have with the new Prometheus prequel series is that the technology looks far more advanced than in the Alien(s) movies, not at all trying to match the original retro aesthetic. Alien: Isolation is in many ways the proper prequel that fans like myself have wanted for a while, and it's $20 or less on most platforms.
Probably hypocritical of me to dislike TLJ so much while defending movies like Venom. ?
