What IP would you like adapted to an Armada style game?

Yea, it sure seems like the vast majority of franchises are far better when they are just left alone. For every Mad Max: Fury Road or AL()ENS there are dozens of projects much more like The Predator (2018) or Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles or The Last Jedi. Heck, even with AL()ENS, it's the case that AL()EN^3, AL()EN Ressurection, AvP, AvP2, Prometheus, and Covenant have all been largely disliked or flat-out despised by fans. Much like how while Star Trek: The Next Generation was an amazing reboot of Star Trek, ST:DS9 was pretty great, while Voyager and Enterprise represented rapidly-sliding quality with the JJ Films and ST: Discovery largely be disliked by "trekkies" for being so divergent from what Trek was about.

I whole-heartedly respect the Babylon 5 owners for holding the IP. Just a shame that, after they've passed away and the IP moves through their estates, it will almost certainly be re-booted in some awful, explosion-laden series that shares little with the original source other than name.

I thought Fallen Kingdom was fun, I knew going in that the movie was going to be nonsensical at various points. Michael Fassbender saves Covenant with his performance as David in my opinion. The main problem I have with the new Prometheus prequel series is that the technology looks far more advanced than in the Alien(s) movies, not at all trying to match the original retro aesthetic. Alien: Isolation is in many ways the proper prequel that fans like myself have wanted for a while, and it's $20 or less on most platforms.

Probably hypocritical of me to dislike TLJ so much while defending movies like Venom. ?

Yea, I have the same beef for Prometheus/Covenant. Like... the xenomorphs in Covenant are able to secretly infect groups of people when tiny little spore pods let tiny little spore clouds into the air and they are unknowingly inhaled. Then a four-limbed, already lethal little back-burster erupts from the host in a short time.

But somehow David is "perfecting" the organism by giving it giant eggs that hatch a single-facehugger that very obviously attaches to its host, takes awhile to impregnate, and then a snake-like embryo births from them. In what world is this an "improved" and "perfected" infection vector? If anything, he's made the xenomorphs radically less efficient and threatening.

Couple that with neither of the Ridley Scott prequels having a compelling character beyond David, and it just sort of falls flat.

I agree though that Fassbender is fantastic and that AL()EN: Isolation is probably the best addition to the franchise since AL()ENS.

In an Armada style setup, with perhaps an Imperial Assault feel? I'd call Wing Commander/Privateer, failing that I'm sure the IP for Freelancer must be available.

I don't know about Armada's system fitting any of the franchises I enjoy. But I wouldn't mind a blend of Armada and X-wing to make a ZOIDS TTG. I wrote a post in the off topic forum about how it would work... I still intend to test run it eventually, but with Armada, legion and possibly dust 1947 grabbing my attention... it could be a while. Here's a link to the write up if anyone cares lol

Star Trek - all day long Star Trek for days!

But I'd also be ok if they did the Terrinoth world, and made it ships, and even added some other goodies like flying Dragons!

My absolute dream (that *had* a chance, but no longer does due to the hard split between FFG and GW) would be Battlefleet Gothic remade using the Armada system. This would make me so happy in so many ways:

  • The 40k universe is huge, plenty to draw from. There are a TON of capital ships to bring in, they wouldn't be near as limited.
  • The future-dark-gothic aesthetic is so delightful, starships in 40k are just gorgeous.
  • Squadrons play such a small role in 40k space combat, and I'm that guy that really dislikes squadron play in Armada.

I think this is what I meant about the engine not being suitable, as is, for a game without diverse squadron play. It's the primary reason that I think Star Trek doesn't work so great.

Now I do think that the engine can be changed (in a not insignificant way) to support a non-squadron oriented game/genre, but it would be far more than a simple reskin of Armada. Additionally I think doing so would make it less suitable for Star Wars, which is fine, but it's a matter of what level of engine adapting one wants to consider.

I would love to see the Halo universe brought into an Armada style system. I never got a chance to play Spartan Games Halo: Fleet Battles before that company went under, but the models looked great (though I wasn't sold on the gameplay system). I think the UNSC and Covenant would fit really well into an Armada style fleet combat game while maintaining differences in how both factions play. The different colored dice already work for Halo ships since there are multiple types of weapons used in ship to ship combat (Plasma cannons, missiles, and MAC guns for example).

But really I just want an excuse to have a game where I can play with those gorgeous and powerful-looking Covenant ships.

Star Trek, without a doubt. Ditch the fighters altogether, use the three basic base sizes for differently sized ships, repurpose the three color dice for phasers versus disrupters and torpedoes, and have great fun. It's the game Attack Wing should've been, if Wizkids hadn't been in such a hurry to cash in on X-wing.

Couldn't agree more! And as far as B5 there was a great game called A Call to Arms (no longer available) but Armada would be an excellent upgrade for that game (especially with plastics).

If I had to choose a Sci Fi Universe to be added to the Armada level of quality with its models and stuff, I'd choose the Halo Universe. I think Halo would be a nice mirror of Starwars universe, especially in the mind of Armada. Both Universe has Capital class ships all the way down to fighters, the factions are all extremely unique to each other, and there is enough deep lore to pull plenty of unique ships, game mechanics and other features to the game.

I want a mine layer style ship or something you can use in armada, so I can try pulling the Key's Manuver from Halo...

I have to say WH40K or Halo for my brother. My vote would be SW so I'm good.

Last I knew JMS still had the rights for making a movie otherwise Warner-bros owns everything else.

It's a little complicated. JMS has creative control and can make B5 productions that aren't linked to the original series, in other words a reboot. He could theoretically make product linked to the originals but Warner Bros. controls distribution and merchandising so if they don't agree (and take all the profits) the production would never see the light of day. This leaves JMS going alone and while he does want to he can't currently raise the money.

Having said that, it has been some years since he last said their was an issue licensing B5 and B5books.com have been producing limited amounts of B5 merchandise, so it might be time for someone to test the availability of the licence. Never in my wildest dreams do I think that Fantasy Flight would acquire it but if they did I would buy everything they made.

Not sure if it would work but I agree with the Firefly idea. Serenity also showed a large volume of capitals and unique ship designs. Seems like the game would be more asymmetrical, though. Unless you set up during the war, you'd basically have the Core defending shipping lanes or high value targets from raiding parties (reaver or otherwise). That being said, it could be a blast.

I also like the idea of Starblazers. Someone already makes a fleet game / minis, but if we're dreaming, it would probably adapt very well. And the lane / quadrant / board clearing super weapons would be a blast to yield.

I imagine Homeworld, Halo or Battlestar Galactica would be the easily adapted. But would probably be the most likely to eat market share of future Armada releases as they could be very similar.

Other random thought: Last Exile. Not sure it would work, but I specifically remember flying ships of the line pummeling each other over rolling countrysides.

At the end of the day, I'd just like to see more Star Wars support.

Surprised nobody said this one... EVE Online. Epic universe, epic ships.

Take this to off topic

by talking about something else or by moving the thread? you are being awfully nonspecific here.

Star Trek is my vote. Battletech systems always (at least TT) revolve around degradation of performance as you take damage and the crit deck doesn’t really do that justice. I love Battletech and want more of that game but this system isn’t it.

I don’t think the Firefly/Serenity IP would work well in Armada. Now, a Firefly reskin/remake of Rebellion could be a thing

Star Citizen / Squadron 42.

Lots of possible factions (UEEN, Vanduul, (human) pirates, Xi'an, Banu etc.)

More spaceships than you can shake a laser repeater at:

Squadrons? Flotillas? Rogues? Did I I mention the part about more spaceships than you can shake a laser repeater at, spanning 10m to several km and built in excruciating detail?

Recognizable characters? I heard you liked Mark Hamill...

So another IP I wouldn't mind seeing as an Armada conversion, would be Starcraft. Mainly because I would love to have a classic Behemoth Class Battlecruiser on my shelf and Desk.

Valkyria Chronicles Tank game. Uses th size, maneuver tool, ranges, and dice aspects of Armada, but your using the tanks of Valkyria Chronicles, including all the wacky ones.

Starcraft.
