How many dice sets?

By Nohwear, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

I may be starting an in person game. Since I do not want to force people to buy dice, especially at the beginning, how many sets of dice should I get for the group to share?

I'd say two. One to share between the players and the other for the GM, that can also be used for the players in a pinch.

thats minimum. probably 1 for gm, and 2 sets for players (you'll have some reserved dices and stuff like that) so 1 set for them will be a bit short sometimes.

Yes, I was going with the absolute minimum.

Reserved dice and techniques like the Worldly Ronin Capstone mean that more dice are convenient.

ive been running the game locally and ive gotten 2 sets.

i would say that its a minimum if all dice are shared, because dice tends to go back and forth between players, and even if i have a cup in the middle of the table with them, peope tends to forget to put them back, so having 2 sets creates a few spares that enables anyone to quickly pick up some dice from the middle to make a test, even if not all dice are back in the middle yet.

If I get a group up and running, we won't have enough dice to go around given the current prices. I bought the app - it's cheap and has as many (virtual) dice as you could ever want.

If you have a phone or tablet that you're okay letting folks use there's the L5R dice app.

1/3 the price, unlimited dice.

There's also a free dice roller bot on discord that works perfectly fine from mobile as well.

I've got 6p in one group, and we're using 4 sets - that puts enough dice that people are only grabbing from others for explosives with Rank 1-2 characters.

So, I'd say 2 per three players for low rank, 1 per player at mid to high ranks. Note also - rank 6 Rōnin can have skills at level 6...

Not quite. It has a 20 die cap.

NEVER ENOUGH DICE!!!

Seriously, thought, I have 5: 1BB set, 2 boosters, 2 betas, and might get a 3rd booster with a gift certificate. We have run with 3-8 players.

buy more dices!! maybe they will do a revised edition 1.5 if we do!

The fact that you bring up a revised edition 1.5 less than a month after version 1.0 was released is not giving me warm fuzzies.

true, it took D&D almost 3 years to go from 3rd to 3.5....

oof...

But 3E had an errata PDF within a few weeks of release...

Most major RPGs released since about 1996 do. The ones that don't are from companies that never release errata unless their licensor threatens to pull their license. And yes, there is a company that had that happen...

Good! I want errata quickly, at least for games that need them. I don't want revised editions I can give as consecutive birthday presents. ;)
