Homing missiles, how have they been working for everybody?

By urbanyeti, in X-Wing

I learned a valuable lesson in a game I played today. ALWAYS use the HM when you have the chance!

My binyare pirate had a shot at a range 2 tie punisher, with no defensive modifiers. I thought, hey, I have a good chance at getting 2 hits with my TL (maybe even a crit!), and then if he whiffs which is also likely, I get 2 damage intead of one!

Well that didn't work out so good. I only got 1 hit after my initial roll and TL rerolls, and then he rolled an evade. So I got no damage AND lost my TL.

That ain't deadeye, it's force only and requires expenditure of token

That's deadeye from pre Cruise/Harpoon missile days since the vast majority of munitions made you burn the token.

Also worth noting that force token is action independent.

So it's the useless 1st ed version of ordnance on a ridiculously limited selection of ships?

Not entirely useful, that

They've done some great work for me on A-wings, especially with Thane flying around looking for blood... er... damage cards to flip!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The build was less, but we do have it you silly person, and more, this is the closest thing we have.

I like the homing missile design and they’ve worked well for me, but it was a pretty ideal situation — Rexler firing homing missiles at Fangs, where they really didn’t want to take the auto-crit.

In general, though, I feel like the high-I ships that can use them most easily often have better things to do (or would rather have the extra bid) and the cheap ships where I’d like to use them have trouble getting the locks at low I. Other ordnance has the same issue with low-I TLs, but with heavier missiles/torps there’s a bigger payoff when you get it.

Was going to say this wasn't how it worked then double checked the Homing Missile card... This is evil... I like it. ?

You don't take auto crits from homing missiles...

It's a hit not a crit.

EDIT: I see now it's because of rexlar using them.

Rexler flips that damage card due to his ability, so autocrit

So if I took some Rebel Zs with homing missiles, should I fly them with:

Thayne?

Dutch?

Bodhi?

Mix some cluster and concussion in there with the homing missile?

Bodhi sounds like an interesting choice, come to think of it. Maybe bring a Phoenix, zoom in ahead and grab an evade, spotting for the rest of the squad?
