Timing: Wind Pact vs. Welcome Mat

By Falculus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Wind Pact: "You may move through pit obstacles without effect. In addition, when a new area is revealed, you may immediately look at the overlord's hand and force him to discard 1 card of your choice. He receives threat for the card that you force him to discard."

Welcome Mat: " Play this card when a hero opens a door . Place a two-space pit token on the two spaces in front of the door. Any figures in those two spaces must roll a power die. If a figure rolls a blank, it immediately moves to an adjacent space of its choice that isn't in the pit. If a figure does not roll a blank, it falls into the pit and suffers 4 wounds (ignoring armor) of Poison damage."

From the Quest Guide under Revealing New Areas: " When a hero gains line of sight to a new area, the area is immediately revealed. ... "

Situation from a game I played last night: A hero with Wind Pact opens a door that separates a revealed area from an unrevealed area. Can the hero force the Overlord to discard Welcome Mat before the OL has a chance to play it? I need some help with the timing of things.

Thoughts?

Welcome Mat goes first because it's trigger is opening the door. Opening the door must be completed before revealing the new area (and therefore wind pact). We know from chest traps that the trap goes off and is completed before the full effects of the chest are resolved (ie treasures get given out), so door traps presumably also go off before the door is completely open.

But I'd be willing to hear arguments the other way...

+1 to Corbon. The door trigger happens first, so the trap should be resolved before the new area is revealed.

Any thoughts on Wind Pact vs. Dire Warnings, though? Those have the same trigger, and both happen "immediately"...

Then the precedent is that the player whose turn it is chooses. This is vaguely alluded to in the "choose the order of start of turn effects" rule (FAQ IIRC) and reinforced by the "Feats vs OL cards, who goes first?" ruling (again, FAQ IIRC). It is only a precedent though, not an actual rule.

PS If Mahkra and I agree then its a dead cert! gran_risa.gif

I agree with Corbon on all points. I'd also say that the hero with Wind Pact falls in the pit from Welcome Mat since the talent only protects him from "moving through" pits. He isn't moving through this pit, it's opening under him.

OK, thanks all. We did think that the trap could be played. I'm glad that you guys feel that we did it correctly. And yes, we did have the hero with Wind Pact suffer the wounds for the reasons that Steve-O alluded to.
