Expansion Packs in 2.0

By Kilrex, in X-Wing

Why do expansion packs have to include upgrade cards? Why not just the pilots and cardboard? They are already going to sell packs without the ship anyway. Why not a separate pack for each wave that just has all the upgrades? Would prevent needless buying of ships you may not want.

If not a pack per wave, what I would really like to see are packs for each upgrade slot. Want newly revealed pilots, crew, and ship titles (for existing ships) after the release of a new movie/show/book/comic? Buy the appropriate faction pack or a pack named after said media release. (This way I won't end up with a 4th Falcon model) Want bombs, turrets, cannons, missiles, & torpedoes? Buy the armory pack. Want modifications, tech, & sensors? But the fitting pack.

The number reason is capitalism because in the end Fantasy Flight Games is a business, a very successful one at that. Adding cards to expansion packs also allow FFG to add ship specific and or faction specific upgrades, corrections or new additions with pilots and ship in that expansion.

Dont worry your Quadjumpers will be getting more than just new upgrades soon, they’ll be getting points increases as well.

Not to mention the fact that adding in something new and fun may bring you to buy a ship for a faction you may not have considered and when you finally sit down with it you're like...hey thats not half bad, and start that faction fully. Thats how I got into scum while fishing for autothrusters, and how I got into Imperials while I was trying to get advanced sensors from Lambdas (and built my enduring love the the Lamda). Yeah buying stuff sucks but I see it as an opportunity to try something new and really expand my mind into new play spaces I hadn't considered. Not to mention the fact that you can probably score some resistance/FO stuff dirt cheap online right now, so go for it and try something new!

This is a conundrum for the scum only players. hopefully most tech will play with concepts your quads don't care about until they get their 2.0 expansion, but honestly it shouldn't be a big deal unless you find yourself at a tournament. most people don't care if you use proxy's in a friendly game, or even a league night at your game shop. back in 1.0, half the people in my LGS were using Renegade Refit on their X-wings as soon as that card was spoiled. I wish I had an option for you that isn't "wait" or "ebay" but for now those seem to be the best options if you need tech for scum and really don't want to buy stuff from another faction.

Eh, it doesn't strike me as all that desirable for quads, but I don't use them so I could be wrong there. That doesn't really change the situation as it stands though. Proxy's should be acceptable unless you're in a tournament. If you absolutely must have the card that leaves just three options. Buying an FO or Res expansion that features the card you want, buying the single card secondhand, or simply waiting for Scum to get an expansion pack with tech upgrades.

Repositioning while stressed is potent, even on a quadjumper. While people right now are focused on their tractor action, Primed Thrusters opens them up to be fairly nimble bombers. 2 Sloop + barrel roll on even a 2 die is also really nice, especially since it'll still only have 1 stress to dump next activation phase, barring a R1 Phasma or Ventress. That isn't even including being able to barrel roll after doing one of the reverse maneuvers. : )

I haven't seen any tech upgrades yet that I'd want on a quadjumper. Primed thrusters doesn't let me tractor, so I don't really want it. Pattern analyser (if it exists) will be much more expensive than contraband cybernetics. Hyperspace tracking is FO only, target lock sharing won't work on a quad, and the one allowing you to spend a focus for a blank attack die also doesn't seem too useful on a ship that likes to do other actions.

Unkar toting around an Informant with Primed Thrusters is nice! [Especially with Stealth Device and cloak token (courtesy of Cikatro moving off the Cloaking Device). Mix in a Deadman's Switch (thanks again Cikatro) and a Proton Bomb. Not like I have done such a thing since he costs more than 1/4 of my list and is pure Scum janky goodness...]

I would absolutely love to see ships largely separated from the cards (except for things like configurations, titles, or other ship-specific upgrades of course). It would also be easier to rerelease cards that they want to balance/errata. Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't make them as much money. Though they did promise to longer force people shell out for ships in a faction they don't play just to get an upgrade they want to use, so that kind of amounts to the same thing.

I think you answered your own question as to why they don’t do this. It’s a feature not a bug.

Cards in random booster packs like magic would be better maybe? Creates a larger secondary market. But then there are always 2 or 3 cards that cost 20$. So you can buy a ship as well and shelf it.

id be happy with playable promo cards as prizes in game night kits. Alt art cards like they did for 1.0

I remember id just gotten the alt art Manaroo. 2-3wks later it got nerfed :( great looking card tho. And very playable at least

for a few wks :)

Why not doing like DBS Card game ? Give a booster with one random card for each participant for a tournament ?

Each card front the booster will be part of a special serie for tournament only, easy to get, easy to exchange if you already have one.

Small fee (2$), easy for the shop to organize and every one enjoy a good moment. I see many Dbs players on my area and with this sytem they organize more tournament and pretty easily than us and our kit !

Nooooooooooooo! I refuse to play the lottery with my games. If this happened I'd probably give up X-Wing.

New tech cards will appear with scum ships that come from the Resistance show. FFG's goal of not having to buy out of faction can still work.

Reverse + Barrel Roll?

No. Just, no.

I agree :D Just saying that would be the only other way they would go, business wise.

Primed Thrusters permits a stressed ship to perform a boost or barrel roll action (2 stress is the cap iirc, I'll check when my pc is booted). Quads can fly backwards for a maneuver, red 1 reverse banks and red 2 reverse straight.

Edit: yep, states 2 or fewer stress.
