Meditation and strife

you're perfectly entitled to an opinion about aspects of the game, but your opinion doesn't change how things work. If you want to houserule stuff that's fine too, but houserules are only relevant for your table - not anyone else's.

How is that supposed to work if Unmaskings, and thus Strife removal, aren't supposed to have consequences?

When I think about "consequences" the picture in my mind does not really line up with "spirits suddenly jump out of the woods and curse you". If you know what I mean. Spending a little more time in the forest as you planned is a narrative consequence. The guard giving you a strange look when you return with a branch sticking out of your hair is a narrative consequence. They are just trivial, like what you should get for going into the forest to vent steam (here note that the rules specifically say that the Unmasking and the consequences should fit the narrative scene - in this case the character being alone in the forest).

Like, you guys are seriously overblowing this Strife/Unmasking thing IMO and it is getting a little awkward because this is the crap the game is trying to shed since its first edition.

Since no one here has suggested having "spirits suddenly jump out of the woods and curse you", you really don't need to keep arguing against it.

well, to be fair, shinobis we're not far from that :D

(remember guys, we're just having fun here, we can all play how we want with our group of players as long as its fun for your gang).

Okay, so I'll rephrase this. To me, being compromised actually isn't a big deal (barring certain interactions in Duels, or with certain techniques). You just can't take more strife symbols, depending on your rolls and what you're good at, that might not bother you in a scene. If you can survive a whole scene Compromised, you're free, you reset to half. Unmasking though, is more dramatic. And it should be more dramatic, because other than the mechanical benefit of removing all strife, there's no reason to do it in a scene where you can just chill and reach the end to stop being compromised anyway. It's a big expression of emotion that the player should roleplay and the GM should integrate into the greater narrative and mechanics. Otherwise it's boring. Don't bother unmasking if it's not important, you only get one of those a scene. Just suck it up and ride it out. That's really what I'm after, doing something in the game which is interesting and dramatic, when the "default" boring part of the natural mechanical flow means you don't even have to do anything. Don't slow down the game for a nothing scene where you beat up a tree. As a GM I don't even care about that, and neither should the player.

But, if you have a dramatic scene where you beat up a tree and dull your sword, and then your mom drops by and you hug and you dramatically swear an oath to kill all your enemies - that's worth having a scene (or part of a scene) about. That moves stuff forward, gives you a roleplaying opportunity and leaves some stuff the GM can complicate later. Or maybe you take a tiny Honor hit because beating up defenseless trees isn't cool and you didn't own that tree and you feel bad about it - but really you should find something better to do with the screen time.

Unmasking is literally losing your composure. If you're in a situation where you have no need to keep your composure, how can you lose it? That, to me, is the core issue here. Unmasking is not merely venting your frustrations or yelling loudly or kicking a tree or whatever - it's doing something you don't want to do because doing so is embarrasing or insulting or otherwise reflecting poorly on you.

I mean, it's a strict interpretation of bushido, but it is an interpretation. I don't think it's like a Glory or Status issue, but you don't own that tree (maybe) and it's not like the tree can fight back.

That might not even be an unmasking thing but more of a "what weirdo attacks trees for no reason?" thing.

This is a question I asked once not long ago, and the answer was something along the line of "404 Answer is Missing" .

and then the "well, should you reset/lower strife when you do nothing ?" question happened.

and then the "if nobody is around, can you unmask to reset to 0 strife" happened.

"otherwise there is no way to lower strife unless you do your passion".

the original question just got deformed so much, its like the telephone game at this point!

This... doesn't make any sense. You can totally lose stuff you don't need. In fact, it's EASIER to lose stuff you don't need because you're not bothered to keep track of it.

Composure - particularly Composure as a game term - is not "stuff" though. ;)

Y'know, the kami are present in nature. There was a kami in that tree, and you just beat him up. I bet his older brother kami is gonna be all, "Yo. Nobody picks on my little brother but me!"

That's okay, because you never lose Composure anyway. You can lose your composure (replace with "calm" or "temper" or "self-control" as you will), which is not a game term.

There are so many things wrong with that picture I don't even know where to start.

Literally my first thought was "Why is a kid in Templar costume relevant to this conversation?"

Anyway, the rules are clear on this: you can only Unmask at the start or end of your turn, and you have no turns outside of scenes, so you can't Unmask. Is it unreasonable for you to Unmask or otherwise auto-dump all your Strife if you have a few days downtime? That's a "each table" call.

Hey, so if you use a Daikyu for Pelting Hail Style, since it is wargear, they take 1 more strife ?

*mindblown*

You're not 'wearing' a daikyu, so strictly speaking one could argue this only works for Wargear armor. I assume weapons are supposed to count as well though. Given that ashigaru armor and better all count as wargear, I'd expect it to be rare to find yourself in a situation where you're using Pelting Hail Style with a daikyu and not already getting the strife bonus anyway due to your armor.

Even better, works with armor.

I got a signet ring or whatchamacallit at character creation with Ceremonial, Wargear, and Sacred. Fear my imposing bling.

I'm not usually one to cry for nerfs and I'm not ready to level any accusations just yet, but any mechanic that allows you to fail a check and still get a benefit from opportunities makes me a little bit apprehensive.
