The 2.0 Squad Builder - - where is it?

By spacesound, in X-Wing

I have been out of the hobby for a few months because of work, and I'm just now getting back into X-Wing. The first thing I wanted to do is download the Squad Builder app for X-Wing 2.0. I have looked everywhere on FFG's site. All I can find is the "online" Squad Builder.

What happened to the downloadable app?

In the app stores for Apple and Android. The pc version is web only.

You can also go to squadbuilder.fantasyflightgames.com on your phone and click on the big download app button.

I suggest using YASB 2.0 or Launch Bay Next, however, there's a few issues with the official app.

did they ever figure out a cost for the shield upgrade on a 0 agility ship?

Yes its 3 points for the shield upgrade which is worth it.

The app is bad. Use YASB2.0

Understatement of the year award, right here.

Is YASB (Yet Another Squad Builder) 2.0 really that much better the the official app?

Oh my, yes. There's no comparison. The official builder may as well not exist for how terrible it is.

The official app is definitely usable, but is VERY bare bones, especially compared to YASB and Launch Bay Next.

I expect the official app to be equal to those two by around wave 3 or 4. I honestly believe FFG put out the contract for bid, hired the cheapest option and got taken for a ride.

YASB 2.0 is fantastic. I haven bought any 2.0 conversion kits or the 2,0 starter set yet. There are several reasons for this but among them is the buggy app. Ive played x-wing since wave 1.

Definitly. The FFG app is okay if you know what you want to input, but for exploring options it is unusable since you can't really compare them, switch between pilots quickly, or even see your point total while chosing a card.

Taking multiple ships with the same load out is exponentially more time consuming with the official app as well...

I generally use Launch Bay, but honestly, the official one isn't nearly as bad as people say it is. It was a launch, but they've ironed out most of the bugs now. The only thing I really miss is dials. For me personally, the always online requirement isn't an issue, but I see how it can be for some people.

It’s still pretty bad. If some free webpage builder is lightyears ahead of your official app, you should really feel ashamed.

- no quick comparison.

- really unwieldy. You have a bad oversight once you look at details, and when you instinctively click on BACK, your list is gone...

- no dials,

- missed opportunity to implement stuff that YASB or the other competition can’t do, like a mode where you can track your stats during a game. Or integrating the already existing dice roll app.

All in all i just can’t understand the dev team there. They had such a great opportunity there, but they just did the absolute bare minimum. So many missed opportunities l.

Oh, just what we need. Take the complaints about needing an app to play a tabletop game and make them slightly less unjustified.

The main app is pretty bad right now, but I don't think it's a problem of wanting to do the minimum, or a bad development team, it's just launch deadlines. Developing an app, especially one that needs to look good, takes a lot of time, and I'm sure FFG just didn't want to hold the entire product launch just for some app features that can easily be added later. In the meantime, we can use 3rd party apps when possible, and continue to give feedback for the FFG app.

Yes and no. There were some features that were simply unpolished, but others were lacking even basic functionality. If they were tasked with developing the app the week before it was scheduled for release, maybe, but then that's a management issue. If they had months to develop the app, then some of the issues can only be attributed to poor development.

I am not complaining about needing an app to play. As far as i understand this thread is also not about that. It’s just that the app is not well made.

I have played Warmachine/Hordes with their Army builder/game tracker app. It works extremely well and improves the game experience by a lot.

So i embrace digitally enhanced gameplay in Tabletop games. If you want to cling to hardcover book collections and tons of printouts, cards and pdfs, be my guest.

There will always be some that are left behind and complain about technology.

So i will rather complain about the fact that the app is not well made and doesn’t go far enough in what it offers than moan about the fact that there is an app to begin with.

Sorry if there was confusion. I wasn't saying that you or anyone else in this thread have complained about technology, but I have seen complaints elsewhere that amounted to, "I don't want to just be staring at my screen the whole time we're playing! That's why I play miniatures games instead of video games!" And moving information from the board to an app would almost add a little legitimacy to that complaint.

I understand.

You can still build lists and play games without any of their digital stuff. I don’t use the app at all, instead i have Yasb like before.

You still can't log into the official squad builder webapp if you're using the Firefox browser which has about equal market share to Internet Explorer. It returns an error code. It's been out for two months and there are still people who aren't able to log in.

In fairness, it's rather difficult to make an actual app that works on all browsers, since not all of them use the same standards.

I understand. But Chrome, IE and Firefox are the three top browsers. It's not that hard to QA a webapp for three browsers. And we're not talking a minor incompatibility like an image doesn't display correctly. It's logging in to the app. That seems like a pretty major bug.
