TAP love

By Smudger13, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I haven’t seen a lot of the TAP on the table locally, but this ship is one of my favourites. Any thoughts on this list would be appreciated.

3 x Baron of the Empire, crack shot, proton rockets.

Out of bullseye, this ship is an expensive academy pilot. But, if you can line up the bullseye... nasty.

Grand Inquisitor, supernatural reflexes, FCS.

You could equally run 4 generic Inquisitors, or the GI, 7th sister and Duchess with 5th Bro gunner for a nice rebels themed list.

What have you guys got for this little ship?

I like grand inquisitor I put supernatural reflexes and proton rockets for 77pts. You must be several steps behind your desired location. You boost or barrel roll before your move link to red focus then do blue clear stress and target lock for fully modified proton rocket in bullseye or range 1 shot.

Crack Shot is primary-weapon only, so perhaps not the best option on PRockets. I'd just delete it, more points for the bid. If you really had to spend them, Homing Missile on the Grand Inquisitor.

A Baron of the Empire with Proton Rockets alone is the same cost as a Saber Squadron Interceptor with just Crack Shot. They seem kind of similar. Personally, while I think a Saber is probably a little better, I don't think a Baron is enough worse to matter that much. They'll be a bit more resistant to chip damage and Proton Bombs.

Another thought would be cheaper missiles and Fire Control System. It's never that easy to get Locks on low-initiative ships, but it seems like an interesting build. FCS seems good on these little knife-fighters once you get into the scrum and want to use your linked movement-into-focus actions along with those slow blue 1s. 5 could be run at 40 points each, with just FCS and Homing Missile. With more points to play with, Crack Shot could be solid on these, since it doesn't really work the same way as other non-primary weapons. You'll ideally be locking at long range, doing a single auto-damage with the Homing Missile effect, then getting close (and maybe even Range 1) with Focus/Lock, and then Crack Shot really shines. Maybe FCS is the upgrade to cut, since Homing usually won't spend the Lock anyhow, but there's no obvious way to spend the points. Outmaneuver is too expensive, and Juke doesn't work with your linked actions.

Personally, I like a single generic Inquisitor with just Sense. 46 points for some good dial-scouting, and a decent base ship. Good linked actions, as well as the force. Seems like an easy one-of ship to slip into a fair number of lists, and it'll work particularly well with stuff like TIE Phantoms with their pre-move decloaking, or perhaps low-initiative Starwings, to get a better sense of how to SLAM or Lock or so forth.
